Here is a pic fo the carbon fiber that we make the boats out of. The only pieces that I can get completetly done are 11/32" X 7/8" X 4". I will be getting the scrap pieces opf sheet to make my own. :D

Way Cool IG! Humm...wondr how I could use some of that along with my wrought iron anchor chain?

Cool stuff ain't it IG? I just made the pocket clip the other night and now I have another batch going for some more scales. Then tomorrow, I am going to try some thing "special" with some new stuff I have coming in. Keep us informed on how it goes when you make it. Let me know if you need any help.

Carbon Fiber is what the fabric is made out of. Basically it is woven strands of graphite. The fabric is then made into a laminate using epoxy or other resins. Supposedly it is stronger than steel and lighter than aluminum. I don't know how a chemist would define it. I am just having some fun making stuff with it. :) :D

Nice looking weave IG. I am to have my first carbon fiber knife scale experience next month. I undertand great care should be used not to inhale its dust.

IG, are you planning on selling those pieces? Is 11/32" just over 5/16" thick? I've never been real great at fractions, so sue me! :D

Chemists wouldn't define carbin fiber because it's a laminate, a chemist would defer naming it to a mechanical engineer. ;) It's exactly what Sean said... thin carbon thread is woven into fabric, then the layers of farbric are stacked, the whole thing is soaked in epoxy of some sort and under pressure (and in manufacturing, probably heat), the whole mess is cured and comes out in a sheet like G-10 or Micarta.

Because it's a fabric, though, there is a lot of flexibility in design. You can do the same process with shaped molds to make anything from gearshift stick heads to dashboards. We used to see it on everything when I was a mechanic in a biks shop: wheels, seatposts, bottom of racing shoes, you name it. Super high-end furniture designers are using it for chairs and lounges, too.

But, man, I'll tell you it is the dirtiest stuff to use, probably the most dangerous, and the toughest. G-10 seems like the easiest to handwork (filing and sanding), and CF is a lot tougher and takes forever to work by hand. I'd put linen Micarta between the two.

You're missing my question . There is carbon fiber, then there is carbon fiber composite which combines fiber and resin. Considering carbon, especially graphite, doesn't hold together very well I expect it's not 'carbon' fiber but something that has a good bit of carbon in it such as a polymer. In any case I can't seem to find it in a search.

Robert, how long have you had that chain and haven't used it????

Send me $$$ for S&H and I'll send you a piece. It is just a little under 3/8". :p
This stuff is nasty like you said. They use diamond cutoff blades to cut thru the layers.
The fabric comes in a roll with adhesive on one side. They just put the layers in a mold and put it under vacuum for 6 to 8 hours in a 200 degree oven.

How much $$ you want? Just need enough for one knife. Then if I get hooked I may be back for more! :D I have been using the same bimetal hacksaw blade for God knows how long and I cut everything with it... 1084, G-10, Micarta, PVC, you name it. Cut up a few bits and pieces off some of that F15 carbon fiber and it totally killed the blade. That stuff is crazy.

Email me your address and I'll figure it out. ;)

So all these high tech things made from carbon fiber are really nothing more than a scortched leasure suit. :)

I finally cut a link off a while back IG. For the first few months, I just stared at the chain, now I'm just staring at the link. I think it's (I'm) posessed! I hear Whalers voices coming from it!

They just had a dead 60' whale wash up on the shore of Southampton L.I. George should use that anchor chain to tow it out to sea !

If it was dead and a sperm whale I would of loved to have been there with a big pair of pliers. :D
