posibly a redundant question so if the info was posted somewhere else please re-direct me....

what models were released with carbon scales/inserts?

i know of the ladybug and dragonfly (from here of course)

the cricket
and the walker C22 (spendy, but at least the others are affordable)

are there others?

the thought here is that since my wallet prevents me from buying the whole spyderco line, i had to pick a specific breed to accumulate. so why not carbon versions?

TheBeak - I think you got them all. We've made prototypes (concept models) in the Military, Police, Civilian, D'Holder and Calypso Jr. but not released in production.

We do plan to make more, but as you say, they are pricey. Difficult stuff to work with. We'll keep the forum posted as to any definite plans made. I personally like the stuff and we've got a line on laminating it with G-10 as well as building the individual scale in a mold (permitting 3 dimentional handles and built in texture).

thanks sal, guess i better start saving some extra pennys now for the future stuff...

got any extra proto stuff in carbon laying arround you wish to give away? (<---<<< sarcasm intended, but somehow it looses something in print.)

thanks,

Sal - I may have missed this earlier (highly likely), but what is meant by "carbon" scales? It this graphite reinforced glass? What are it's advantages and why is it such a turkey to work with?

Thanks,

Jack

Jack - I'm assuming (hopefully correct) that reference to "carbon scales" means carbon fibre reinforcement with resin, as opposed to glass fiber, paper or linen filler. Carbon fiber has proven to be very strong for it's weight. Recent tests at Spyderco indicate that it is even stronger than previously imagined.

Downsides:

1. It won't hold screws very well so the scale must be backed by some type of liner if anything is going to be screwed to it.

2. It is toxic to breath and grinding it causes dust. Very fine filters must be used in the mask when grinding carbon fiber.

3. It is expensive to purchase and work with.

We are currently testing composite laminates with G-10 and carbon fiber. mVery sgrong and light, but still needs a liner for screws. Hope this helps.

sal, yes you got what i ment by carbon scales, didnt know the "industry" term for the material i guess (im just a humble ELU) although i think i got the knife anatomy portion correct.

i have an example of each now, but the walker, and thats gonna get rounded up next month (or so). now you have to make some stuff i cant afford so my "collection" will be forever incomplete. (...well i could sell the wifes car, "uh, gee honey, must have been stolen....")

do you realize what this knife buying is doing to my kite budjet???? (flush!)
