Carbon steel, flat ground stockman?

I´m looking for a full size (>3 7/8 inches) stockman, with carbon steel, flat ground blades - at least the clip point one- and wood, stag or bone handle. Up to now, and although not sure about the grinds, I think that German Eye, Boker, Bull Dog, and Hen & Rooster have some items that fit the profile. I know for sure that Case are hollow ground, and my experiences with Queen haven´t been good at all, so I don´t want anything from them, neither from related brands (Schatt-Morgan, Moore Maker and so on).
Any recommendation? I would like to know which one of the mentioned brands has better fit (I hate bladeplay) and finish, and also your first hand experience in case of having handled one of them. If it´s possible, I´ll be very grateful for a good on line seller recommendation too.
Thanks in advance.
Regards.

I have a large Eye Brand stockman, and it has great blades that are well ground. Spring tension is just right, and there is no play in the blades.

You may want to take a second look at Moore Maker, specifically the Queen-made versions with yellow bone (not the Bear-made yellow bone with a B in the model number). I know that you have issues with Queen, but my Moore Maker 5301 (3 7/8") stockman has outstanding fit and finish, and the blades are ground thin with a thin edge bevel, no reprofiling needed. I have only seen two Moore Maker knives that were made by Queen, but both are very high quality.

I have a Boker stockman, and it is also well made - smooth action, good fit and finish - but I like the Eye Brand and Moore Maker better. I don't know if Boker makes a stockman larger than 3 7/8".

Henckels may fit the bill if you can find them still.

Look into Great Eastern Cutlery, you may find something there but they do come a bit on the big side, fine workmanship on the 4 I own.

Sevilla - see my comments about Queen quality on the Queen fit & finish thread. I don't have any hesitation recommending a Queen stockman, but I would only recommend a mountain man with a warning about blade play.

I've had really good luck with Cold Steels, but they are just on the edge of not being big enough for you.

I have a Jim Bowie large stockman with carbon steel blades. I really like the knife it has great springs and fit. The Jim Bowie is made by Eye Brand knives.
It sharpens easy(scary sharp) and holds an edge well. I would highly recommend buying one. I have a small Moore Maker stockman knife that is much harder to sharpen and doesn't have the spring of the Bowie. I had to sand down the sheepsfoot blade to get it to snap shut. The Moore Maker is very sharp and holds and edge well. The Moore Maker is one of the Camillus made, I would steer clear of the Moore Maker stockman with a b after the model number, not that I ever had one but my son had a Bear and Sons knife that I wouldn't have hit a hog in the ass with.

I have a Boker Tang Stamp in carbon, it measures 4".
Red pick bone, good knife for the price.

LOL.....wish I saw that post earlier. I'm in the process of exchanging a NIB Queen Mountain Man (1095 + sambar stag model) for that exact reason--blade play. In addition, it came with green (brass?) corrosion under the stag. Own a Schatt & Morgan Mountain Man without any of these problems, wish Queen would pay more attention.

Case still has some Stockmans that use Carbon Steel you can check their website for the handle materials.

CASE had in 2007 Medium Stockmans in CV in Yellow, Redbone,Amberbone(3 types inc large)and Bonestag. Amberbone and Bonestag are really handsome scales:thumbup:

I have a Case stockman in CV. It is definitely not flat ground. All the Case stockmen I have seen have been hollow ground.

In fact, are any of the knives being recommended flat ground blades?

Older Case knives are flat ground. All of my Queen, Moore Maker, Eye Brand, and Boker knives are flat ground.

I've seen some excellent ones from Boker, Eye Brand, Indian Head, Moore Maker, but you take your chances on all when buying on the internet.

I occurs to me that there are two makers that fit your description that I've never seen a bad stockman from, by which I mean weak snap or blade play. Unfortunately they are both out of business: Schrade and Camillus.

However there are still many available on collector sites and ebay. I'd recommend either a Schrade 8OT, or a Moore Maker yellow handle stockman made by Camillus.

Here's link to a site where you can still get some of the Camillus made Moore Maker Stockman knives from a seller who I've had excellent experience with, and who has a great reputation in general. His name is Mike Latham.

Good luck!
