Carbon steel folder?

Hi guys,
I'm new to knife making, so far I've only made 1 fixed blade knife out of an old file. It turned out ok. I want to try my hand at making a slip joint knife next.
My question is; is it a bad idea to make the knife out of carbon steel? My wife is a stay at home mom so we're on a budget and I'm sure the first folding knife isnt going to be great, so I don't really want to spend extra on stainless and have to pay to ship it to get heat treated when I can get a piece of 1084 pretty cheap and heat treat it myself, I'm worried about the spring or blade rusting inside the knife where I can't easily get to to oil it. Is this something I should be concerned about or is it easy enough to add a drop of oil here and there?

The vast majority of quality slip joints are carbon, not stainless. Case's CV and CS are not stainless, almost all GECs are not stainless, almost all traditional Böker slipjoints are not stainless, and so on. I've seen and used non-stainless slipjoints that were over a century old. Oil every once in a while and you'll be fine.
