Hi,

I am looking for a carbon steel lockback, just to find out how it is to edc a carbon steel knife. The lock is as I prefer folders I can open with one hand.

Perhaps something like a Case Copperlock knife in CV. Although, as far as I can tell Case doesn't make them any more in that steel.

Any ideas???

Thanks,
JD

Keep an eye on ebay JD, and also the "production knives for sale" forum here. I just recently picked up a Copperlock off of both.

Check out the Case Mid-Folding Hunter. I would recommend this dealer. The knife is at second from the bottom on the left on that page. I do not represent this dealer but have bought from him numerous times.

I've only owned this knife for about two weeks now, and am still getting used to it (I do traditional slippies, mainly). It's heavier than a Spyderco Delica, and doesn't open quite as easily since it does have a spring. However, it's a solid, well built knife. It is a liner lock, not a lockback, but it is a one hand opener.

I do not know of a lockback (ie, Buck 110/Spyderco Delica style) that offers both one-hand opening and carbon blades. If anyone does know of one, I'm interested!

My Mountain Man Lopckback is pretty easy to open with one hand. Others have stated the same about their's. Its not as quick as a knife that was designed to open that way, but is definetly doable.

I use the side of my thumb or thumbnail to catch the nail nick and get it started. Then just use the pressure of my thumb against the blade to finish.

I have been looking for the same thing for several weeks with no luck. Seems like a simple enough pattern.....3 1/2" closed length, lockback with a single 1095 blade. A Case mini-copperlock pattern would be ideal but I haven't had much luck finding a high carbon version.

I wish Queen would come out with a mini-Mountain Man. Maybe call it a Mountain Boy.

There was a time a few months ago when the Case yellow handled copperlock with CV clip blade could be found on the net. It might be worth searching for or maybe even posting in the "Knives Wanted" section here on bladeforums. Just a thought.

When I got mine I was able to find the larger wharncliffe version (CV) as well.

I happen to have one of these knives. Same as the one shown.
It is well made and very sharp.

As noted, it is a combination of a liner lock and backspring; very unique.
Though it's not a lockback, it has the "feel" of a lockback because the backpring is applying tension against the tang.

And it's the only one hand opening locking carbon steel folder I know of.
(I looked at a Boker Trapperliner thinking it might fit the description, but it's stainless.)

You might like to consider a Weidmannsheil, either a 3.75" single blade lockback in stag or a 4" 2 bladed Triclock also in stag. Nice&solid, carbon with stamped blade and something different:thumbup:

Queen Cutlery offer a nice Teardop liner lock but it's in D2 not carbon. But it will help you fill up time learning how to sharpen a new knife....:D

Moore Maker's small yellow delrin lockback in carbon (about 3.25") could be worth looking into.Well traditional.

Here is a very sweet and slim Gentleman's Folder,, A Queen Cutlery, Company Copperlock pattern in Abalone!.

This gal is a lamp in any lighted situation because of its quality Abalone scales, and in D~2 none the less!. One of the most gorgeous knives I ever had..

I have the Queen swell-end (tear drop) and it's a very nicely put together knife. (Doesn't even need the lock imho).

But, there's no way you can come close to opening it one handed. Strong spring and a very flush, low nail nick.

If the main criteria is one-handed opening versus the locking mechanism itself, you could add something like this to any larger carbon blade knife you want. Lots of guys over on the Buck forum use these (or something similar) on their 110s. You could also drill/tap the blade for a thumbstud or send it off to have someone else do the work. I imagine that would be a pretty reasonably priced modification.

The one below is at http://www.discountcutlery.net/ you can search for "stud" as it's called "The Stud Knife Opener."

I just checked out the queen mountain man and fully agree with you. A mini mountain man would be very usefull.

willgoy means this one.

Here is a link to a slightly larger MM knife, as well. It's a bit over 3.5" closed. Carbon steel blade.

Also, I just noticed another MM you might want to look into. It seems they make a One-hand-opening Jr. Roper lockback with a clip. Available in either serrated or non-serrated. 3.75" closed. Carbon 1095 blades.

Good luck, J D Wijbenga, and let us know what you end up with and how you like it.

I think I found one. The Eye Brand Sod Buster Junior as seen on this site (thanks for the tip Yosemite Sam). I especially like the one with the stag scales. Unfortunately it seem to be out of stock at the moment so I should have some patience . I did find the same knife on another website, but the do not sell to overseas customers.

So, what do ou think of this knife? Or of the Eye Brand, are they good?

Argh... Good find mnblade, but rumor has it this is one that was made by Camillus, and is no longer available. It's "temporarily out of stock" on MM's page, and they're not easy to find elsewhere.

J.D., Eye Brand is generally well thought of. It's a German brand, so you might be able to find one in a European-based web store. I don't have that particular knife, but my Eye Brand Copperhead is quite nice. One thing I might point out is that since the Sodbuster isn't a one-hand opener either, you might look at one of the various makers' Mountain Man knives in carbon, since these tend to be a little heavier, and dare I say, a little "nicer". On the third hand, the Sodbuster has a nice blade profile, so whatever floats your boat... :)

Two comes to mind. How about a Case RussLock or a Scagel styled folder. The latter being more expensive.

The Russlock is a ease one hander.
