Carbon steel multitool or SAK

:confused:I would love to have a multitool or SAK with a carbon steel blade with some grooves on the top of the blade for using flint to make a spark. The remainder of the tools are probably best stainless steel.

Personally, I like carbon steel in a knife blade anyway because of the ease of sharpening, edge holding and toughness. A2, heat treated to about R60 and cryo-treated would be ideal.

Does anyone make such a thing? If not, does anyone make an easily replaceable carbon steel knife blade for any model SAK or good quality multitool?

You're about the only one who wants this. The closest I think you'll find are some of Schrade's offerings, but they're mostly just multi-bladed pocket knives, not multi-tools.

Maybe the best solution would be to have a fire starter tool in your bug-out bag or whatever.

I have been kicking around the same ideas. The best I can do is a 2 knife system: SAK with your favorite tools + Traditional folder with carbon blades. Case has several models with Chrome Vanadium blades, GEC uses 1095, or perhaps an Opinel might suit you.

an Opinel might suit you.

That's not a bad thought - the Opinel knives seem to have a nice sharp square back and you could strike sparks of a firesteel with the blade closed. My #6 pretty much disappears into a pocket and is too light to really notice it, but it is VERY sharp and cuts well - it also works well as a steak knife.

Thanks for the responses. If I knew that I might run into a survival situation I would simply carry a few cheap lighters around. However, in the real world these situations tend to arrive when least expected. In almost anyplace in the world hard rocks can be found. I have found that often you can get a spark by simply striking two rocks together, but the spark is weak and would be difficult to start a fire. Having a piece of carbon steel in one's pocket all the time would be useful.

A SAK or multi tool is so much more useful than a knife that I rarely carry a pocket knife these days.

Maybe I will contact that fellow that sells special run SAK's to see if he ever plans to consider a carbon steel blade. I know he has done "Damascus" blades.

I've been thinking something similar to this, too. I like SAK's and other multi's as well, but I can never carry just a SAK because the blade is never quite what I'm looking for. I am a big fan of carbon steel for its ease of sharpening, and the aforementioned firesteel friendliness would definitely be a bonus. Perhaps to make a carbon blade for one? now that sounds fun.

I just pulled out my SOG Para tool and used the file on my ferro rod. I got as much spark with it as I did with the back edge of a hacksaw blade. If you have metal file on your SAK or multitool you might give it a try to see if it will work. My file is cut on 3 sides and I used the edge along one side and the bottom.

Every MT I've ever had from my SuperTool to my Swisstool, to my Charge and Wave all had some tool on them that was good a striking a ferrorod, generally the file or the spine of the saw blade...or the awl.

Carbon steel is great but it's not necessary...
