Left my felco #2 pruners out in the yard overnight and they rusted - no shock - but with pitting that was deep enough to surprise me. Made me wonder what kind of steel I'm dealing with, would be nice to know the type, and so the characteristics in general for sharpening and care. I can't find any info beyond "carbon steel" after some middle-intensity internet searching, so I thought I'd ask if anyone here had an answer - whats in the Felcos?

Beyond that, is anyone privvy to whether there are common types of 'carbon steel' that tend to get used in mid to higher quality gardening and yard equipment with replaceable blades, like Felcos, Cornona, the better Fiskars loppers & so on? I assume it's something like, idk, 5160 or in the 1045-95 range, but any actual knowledge on this would be appreciated

I don't know the answer to your question, but I can tell you how to easily get that off. Get some naval jelly. It will turn all the rust into a black patina and they you will have a usable tool again.

After you sharpen it, of course.

thanks! ive never used naval jelly, i'll have to look into it. when i found them i just sanded and polished it off, then oiled them, so they're back in good shape. that's actually how i saw the depth of the pitting. i think i'll probably use them until they don't cut well before giving a go at sharpening them, but i'm actually looking forward to taking it apart and seeing how it's assembled when i do.

Not sure on most tools . I know Vaughan makes their hatchets out of 1085 . I just ordered a garden hoe made from recycled disc blades
