Carbon steel...?

Buck's Custom Shop gives a lot of excellent choices in exotic steels (BG-42, etc.). What are the chances of Buck offering its 110 in, say, good old 1095, or even better, 52100? (I'm already drooling...)

I would jump at the chance to have a Buck in carbon steel.

I like the sound of a Buck in carbon steel. I would like to see the 300 series in carbon steel. Maybe a 503 or 703 or......

Hmmmm...you CAN get a 110 in high carbon steel from PCKS. Where do you find that option, you may ask? Why, right in front of your eyes.

Damascus. It should have the same edge holding of 1095 with the plus of looking great. And the use and care of a damascus blade is the same as for any high carbon steel blade.

You guys are killing me!

Carbon steel for PCKS, why not? 1095 is good, and I really like the E52100 (bearing-grade) material idea. Both are excellent for wear resistance and will achieve a high hardness which is what edge retention is all about.

Personally, I think D2 might be a little better since it has high wear resistance and good impact resistance. Plus it's easy for us to get and is available in a wide range of stock sizes so we can get some good economics out of the run. But let's not worry about that.

Are there any other suggestions? Who knows, we may just be able to sweet talk Pete (the little balding guy) into it.

A carbon steel blade option for PCKS in any of the steels suggested by Pete sound great to me. I would certainly use the option.
I would really like to see the carbon steel as well as the other blade options offerd in a drop point as well as the standard blade. Is that possible?

Pete, D2 would be a great idea!
I have a couple of knives in this material and it is a fantastic edge holding steel.
Hmm, how about a Nighthawk or Big Sky in D2?

Absolutely, 1095 c-steel knives with Buck's name. Would they sell?... Like hotcakes.

Thanks Al...just ordered a sambar stag 110 with damascus blade, nickel silver bolsters and no rivets.

Not too much sambar stag around, and the price was much less than you see on ebay and this has the Edge 2000 bevel.

D2 sounds pretty good, however I'd like to see 52100. I hear that D2 is tougher than 52100(I could be wrong) but for me that is not a major quality that I look for in a 110. However, I have a Marble's in 52100 that holds an incredible edge, and would like to see that steel offered on a 110.

I guess D2 would be okay with me 'cause it would give me a chance to try a steel that is held in such high regard here.

Let's see ....

3 for 1095
3 for 52100
3 for D2

I'll get right on it.

How about this; since one of our heat treatment vessels went down (the big salt pot), we would have to harden 1095 and 52100 using an outside heat treater since those materials oil harden. Of course, they would follow a hardening and tempering recipe clearly outlined by Paul Bos - but who's watching them.

Now, D2 is an air-hardened steel, and can be done right here using our normal furnace under Paul's watchful eye. IOW - Bos Treated! That goes a long way for me since no one knows heat treating better than Paul. Why! He was heat treatin' before heat was invented (slight exaggeraton).

Anyhoo, we are seriously considering adding a carbon steel blade option because it is do-able, and not a bad idea at all. Any and all feedback would help a great deal. Besides, them Laser guys love a challenge.

Sounds like a fine idea. D2 for me, too.

Pete,
Add me to the list of people who would love to have a D2 110. Now could you just tweak it a bit and make the blade a drop point? That would really get the exitement level up!!
There are some handle options I would love to have from Pete's shoppe, and this would entice me to order another one.

My continuing plea! Let the new PCKS start up with the drop point blade option included.

You made me dust off the ol' drafting tools.

Is this what we're talking about Larry? I'll run it by the big guy and see what he thinks. Hmmm, maybe I should have drawn that without the nail notch.

As far as D2 goes, alls I know is that we use a lot of that stuff in our tooling around here, and it takes a pretty good beating.
