I don't use much carbon steel, but I'm going to order some in the near future. Do I want cold rolled or hot rolled and why? What do I want, 1084, 1095? I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.

Tom,
If you're just starting out and can get your hands on small quantities of different types of steel - try out a few and see what you like. Are you doing forging or stock removal?

I've been making knives about fifteen years, but I always used stainless and haven't ever ordered carbon steel. I've made a few out of O-1 that I've had laying around and decided to try some carbon steel. I've got some L6 in the shop, but it's a little to thick for what I have in mind. I'm strictly stock removal, to banged up to swing a hammer. Thanks for the reply.

I ordered cold rolled annealed 1095 from Admiral, and its had pretty good performance. Cold rolled can warp a little bit more though, so if you heat treat, make sure you normalize. Also, when you finish your knife, finish it finer than you would a stainless knife, because it helps prevent rust.
