I was wondering if anybody knows what knid of steel Cold Steel's Carbon V is? I hope this was the right place to ask this question. Thanks for any input!:)

I found some info a while ago using the search function, but can't remember what it said... I believe it was tested and found to be one of the "normal" production steels that they renamed to suit their purposes. I have a blade made from it and whatever it is, it holds a mean edge.

I read somewhere that it is really 5160 with a really neato spiffy heat treat.

I have a twistmaster that I have used extensively for the past 5-6 years and a SRK 2nd that I have beat up pretty good.

If you do a search on some of the fourms you'll find that the general consensus is that it is 50100 or the 0176-whatever (they are the same steel) that Camillus uses for its Becker series. Based on my experience with using it, that seems about right. Plus, Cold Steel knives are made by Camillus, so it makes sense that they would use that steel.

Cold Steel and Camillus are the same company? Like Chevy and GMC?

What ever it is it is good stuff!:) Thanks for the help!

Cold Steel is not Camillus!

Think of Cold Steel doing exactly what Nike does; they are marketers! Cold Steel may coem up with a design, but then they get someone else to make them. Cold Steel handles the marketing end of things. Camillus makes their carbon steel blades (don't ask Camillus, they won't tell you that they do.)

Carbon V is just a name, by the way. Rumor has it that exactly what Carbon V is has changed in the past a few times. Whatever they have used, I have never heard complaints about the carbon steel. But, even IF the steel is the same as the Becker steel today, tomorrow it could be something different!

Camillus makes and amrkets their own knives. They also make a lot of knives for other companies. Craftsman knives are made by Camillus. If you want to try out an inexpensive stockman, go to Sears and know that youa re getting a knife made with Camillus Quality.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that Cold Steel and Camillus were the same company. I think that Camillus makes knives for a lot of different companies besides themselves. One that comes to mind is the Remington knives of years past. They look a lot like some of Camillus/Western and Cold Steels' knives.

I have been very happy with Cold Steel knives. I never knew that they were made by Camillus. Chalk this up to another bubble being busted in the real world. Oh well, I still like em, who would of thought.

You still like them? What've you got against Camillus? I think they're about the best knife manufacturer out there.

In "The Wonder of Knifemaking" Wayne Goddard tested the composition for "one of the original Trailmaster Bowies" and it came out to be .95 C, .46 Mn, .16 Si, .48 Cr, and .19 V, and a bunch of trace elements. I believe these are percentages, the balance being Iron. He says it is "closest to a chromium-vanadium cutlery steel" not unlike 6150.
Hope this helps.

Ah, ok I found the info I read...

"Carbon V
Carbon V is a trademarked term by Cold Steel, and as such is not necessarily one particular kind of steel; rather, it describes whatever steel Cold Steel happens to be using, and there is an indication they do change steels from time to time. Carbon V performs roughly between 1095-ish and O-1-ish, in my opinion, and rusts like O-1 as well. I've heard rumors that Carbon V is O-1 (which I now think is unlikely) or 1095. Numerous industry insiders insist it is 0170-6. Some spark tests done by a rec.knives reader
seem to point the finger at 50100-B. Since 50100-B and 0170-6 are the same steel (see below), this is likely the current Carbon V.

From the knowledge base on this site... Thanks Joe.

Camillus IIRC was a general or senator in ancient Rome. [Marcus Furius Camillus]. Central NY is loaded with such names from the classical period. Ca-mil '-lus.

Yes , that seems the most logical steel . If they would just publish the composition that would avoid all the rumours !! Anyway it makes a fine blade steel in such knives as the BK-7 !
