Cardboard Cutting with Inexpensive Knives

So today, for no reason at all, I decided to do some cardboard cutting. So I pulled out a Kershaw Scamp and a Buck Vantage Select. Both are sub-30 dollar knives and have blade steels of 8CR13MOV and 420HC. I cut some pretty tough single ply cardboard. Each knife made around 20-25 cuts, with an average length of 4-5 inches.

The Scamp cut pretty well, however I don't think that the Vantage is a good slicer. The thick blade stock and deeper hollow grind makes for quite a shoulder that has to be wedged through the medium.

Both knives held their edge respectably well, and both were able to slice magazine paper afterwards with no problems. The ergonomics on both were pretty good; the only discomfort was from my nails digging into the base of my thumb. There is a titanium nitride coating on the Scamp. There's some wear on the finish, but the steel doesn't show through. There's no wear to speak of on the Vantage, just some tape residue.

Sorry about the crappy phone pictures

Just wanted to share my experience with you. All in all, not bad performance for such inexpensive knives. I'd love to see pics of your beater knives. Thanks for reading.
