Cardboard strop recharging

Just had a short stropping session (with my notepad backing + Dremel rouge strop), I noticed the edge wasn't getting polished as I had expected. The little Sharpmaker grind lines were still on the edge. I don't usually charge the strop before use, but this time I tried recharging, and it worked like a charm.

The stuff on the strop was turning black, probably steel buildup, and it was pretty smooth to the touch. After rubbing more rouge into the cardboard, it felt much more grabby to the touch. Now that's why I've been getting poor edge-holding lately. I was probably just pushing the wire-edge around.

So, remember to charge up your strop! :)

Another thing, does anyone else use Dremel rouge (the red stuff in the little plastic bottle)? Can anyone tell me how this stuff compares to the Veritas compounds? Thanks in advance.

yes, intended for soft metals, but does it work for hardened metals?

Hey... funny bit of trivia... Listerine was originally used as a douche...

It is intended for softer metals as it doesn't have the ability to cut harder ones, the major component is iron oxide, rust. I would suppose it would be better than nothing, but there are far better abrasives out there and they are all very cheap. You can get a lifetime supply of CrO for a few dollars.

Thanks for the replies. Now I'm pretty excited to've learned an absolute truth in the journey to the final frontier in sharpness. CrO is a better strop compound than iron oxide. I've got to try and get some in a hardware store.

Just one more nugget of wisdom picked up on the Forums :)

rouge will work for harder metals!!! I use it in knifemaking to polish 420 steel bolsters!!!

Where can you get the CrO2 "green" stuff? I checked Sears, and they had 4 different kinds of compound, but no green. I got the block of white compound that is labled for stainless and other hard metals. BTW, works great on polishing my edge.
