Care for horn

I've been reading up on how to keep that horn handle maintained. Hooflex, ballistol, plain lanolin cream, mineral oil, and even olive oil.

I'd love to get my hands on some hooflex, but that stuff isn't available in Canada. Same results with lanolin + ballistol.

Canadian winters here are bone dry and cold. It's already getting cold, and I fear the worse.

Keeping this in mind, can someone recommend a substitute that will combat an infamous Cdn climate?

Dave I'm pretty sure all of us that have the Ballistol had to order it online.
I'm reasonably sure they ship to Canada. Try www.Ballistol.com
It's good stuff and doesn't smell to high heaven as Hooflex reportedly does.:D

If all else fails. Try checking with one of the beauty shops or beauty supply houses for cuticle oil. It should prevent any large cracks from developing. It softens fingernails a bit so it sure can't hurt. I used the stuff till I found what I use now.:)

I know a couple of people in Canada and they managed to get their grubby hands on some Hooflex. You can also get other types of hoof conditioner from you local farm and feed stores. I think Kismet uses Bag Balm which is supposedly available all over the place. Leevalleytools.com has it. I think there's a location in Toronto.

Also, when the central heating comes on, I keep a small dish of water by the heat vent. It keeps the air from getting too dry. Good for chapped lips and probably for knife handles too.

The pine tar in Hooflex smells like Christmas. It's very festive. :)

Although I have hooflex, I also use Mountain Equipment Co Op's Boot Guard. It seems to have a good dose of lanolin in it. It brings out the grain of the horn too. It has no festive smell. :(

Hey, Dave, you can always look for beauty aids with lanolin. For example, Alberto V05 has a fair amount of lanolin. I believe you can also get pure lanolin at a pharmacy.

Dave:

By all means order up some ballistol - they are very prompt with their shipping. If you are lucky you will still have some left for your khuks after using it for all the other things you can do with the stuff. No "essence of Hooflex" to deal with either.
