I'm not a collector, but do have a few classic and expensive folders that I intend to start using. One has stag handles. They both are stainless. I plan to use them for general use including field dressing game, etc. Since they will be exposed to blood etc. I'm curious what would be the best process for making sure to protect/preserve them since folders have nooks and crannies that need to be taken into account. My original thinking is to rinse well in warm/hot water and scrub with a brush perhaps. Then to use some sort of spray lube in order to penetrate nooks and crannies etc. (not sure what lube would be the best to use, but definitely don't want to harm the stag scales on the one knife.) Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

One rule I like to follow is when it gets nasty, get a fixed blade. I do not always follow my own rule so I use a Benchmade 710. One thing I like about my 710 is the fact it can be taken apart. I use my 710 when I know things are going to get goopped in all the hard to clean places and I don't have a FB near. When you take the knife apart, you can clean it very well and fast.

If I am using one of my folding Bucks for nasty stuff I just rinse it in soapy hot water, and if it is dried gunk I will let it sit.

After a good cleaning I just oil and touch up the edge.

I would agree with using a fixed blade or a knife that can be taken apart easily.

Another option might be an ultrasonic cleaner although I don't know how things like bone and stag might fair in those.

Even with a brush its not always possible to get all the crud out.
