First I need to admit that I haven't got to look at everypost here so if there is a thread about this please point me to the right direction.

So I ordered a Knife. What now. how do I make sure my nephew takes care of it and cleans it and stores it the right way. Anyone got any care tips for Andy's work?

This is just my opinion but I like to keep a coat of mineral on the blade at alltimes. Patina will form, which is good! Wash it down after heavy use and always follow up with oil. If they ever get surface rust just hit it with 0000 steel wool and oil. A couple times a year soak the handles in oil and let dry. For micarta I like mineral oil and for wood, danish oil or coats of truoil. A tip on truoil, it takes forever to dry but if you apply and rub armorall on it it drys in minutes.

Chris has it right. Most of the time I dry the knife on my pants, and re-sheath. When I get home I clean the blade with soapy water, dry thoroughly, and oil with min oil.

Occasionally, I slather the handle (wood, or manmade or bone) with mineral oil and leave it to dry. Then buff.

Personally I do the same as above, but apply a thin coat of vaseline instead of mineral oil. Doubles as a nice fire starter hah

any oil/lubricant is really fine if we are just talking about maintaining the steel. however, i prefer the mineral oil, since i use my knives for food prep. safe for ingestion...that kinda thing.

do not use food based oils (e.g. olive oil, etc), since they will go rancid, or so i've heard.

EDIT: forgot to mention...i (occasionally) use linseed oil on the handle.

Vaseline is also food safe.

lol. had no idea. :o i suppose that makes sense, since you can use it on lips. thanks for the correction.

I think we feed some to the cat occasionally for hairballs, very versatile hah

I remeber being sick once as a kid and Oprah had some nutter on there telling the women to eat a teaspoon of vaseline each day for some beauty reason. LOL.

As a knifemaker, I have also found that it is the only thing that helps my chapped hands. My hands are like a dogs pads. They are abrasive.

Ha! You could use them to sand down handles in that case

My dad had the same issue working as a millwright and swore by Bag Balm. Very potent stuff.

Bag balm is awesome. I have some and use it regularly here in winter wonderland. As for the knives, I use a bit of mineral oil too.
