I know absolutly nothing about throwing knives, but find them very interesting. I've always thought it would be fun to throw around a knife; so I decided to buy one. I went to a local pawn shop and bought a "throwing" knife for $8 Canadian. I don,t think the blade is very good quality, concidering the fact it says "Pakistan" (I don't even think the blade is straight). The knife is solid metal w/ 4 holes in the blade. The balance point of the knife is at the top of the handel(close to the middle), I thought since it was for throwing, the blade should be heavier. So I then ground off a little bit of the handel, now it is balanced in the middle. I can rarely get it to stick in the wood (I have no idea how to throw the knife).

Is it the knife's fault, or mine can somebody please helpe me! How do you throw a knife? Where should the knifes balance point be?

I think I will resolve my problem by buying a new knife, I was thinking about the torpedo or the sure flite, both by cold steel. Are these any good, or should I just gring down some pieces of rebar? Should I get a small or big knife? Heavy or light knife?

Please help me!!

There are some excellent throwing resources on the web. I would first reccomend the "Thrower" website, which has articles on all things throwable. ( I'm at work and don't have my links handy.)

Second is the "Great Throwzini" webpage. Again, tons of articles, and a source for instructional videos, books, etc.

These guys can explain things better than I could in a brief post.

Quick lesson on throwing:

One turn knife throw-

1. Stand with your back to the target.
2. Take five (5) normal paced steps away from the target.
3. Turn around and mark the toe distance.
4. Throw at target observing the knife handle.
5. Adjust, move up 6 inches if handle is up, move back 6 inches if handle is down.
6. continue to adjust until it sticks.
7. measure your found distance for THAT knife so you can start there later.

Five paces will put you around 12 feet. You should not have to adjust more than 3 times (1.5 feet).

For a tomahawk take 6 normal paces and throw/adjust.

That's all there is to it. Remember that each knife style (length/weight) has it's own distance for your throw.

Well I have three cold steel true flighs and they work pretty good. They can really take I beating. ALthough I am still very new to throwing knifes I can say that I can get them to stick about 80% of the time. Just go look online and see what you can find on throwing knifes.:D
