Cargo shorts

Well, even though it's going to snow again this week, spring will be here eventually. It's time to start thinking about warm weather. Last year, my old cargo shorts split all around the waistband, and I finally had to turn them into polishing rags. So, I'm in the market for some new ones. I will probably buy two types. Some lightweight, non-cotton, quick drying pairs for weekend hiking/biking and daily walking, and a canvas pair for casual use.

I prefer shorts without a built-in belt, since that limits my ability to wear a belt sheath or pouch, but that is not an absolute requirement. I would like at least one pocket to have a zipper or other very secure closure. And, a knife pocket would be put to good use...;) The cargo pockets don't need to be huge. In fact, I find that weighing them down with too much stuff makes them a little awkward and uncomfortable. Beyond that, I don't have a lot of criteria, so I'm open to suggestions. I started looking at a bunch of brands at retail and online stores, but there are too many to sort them all out.

Your thoughts?

I know you said you prefer the ones without the built-in belt, but if you ever reconsider, Ex Officio makes a good pair of Amphi-shorts, which are synthetic and wrinkle resistant, and I can highly recommend. I also have a pair of The North Face cargo shorts that are thick, super durable cotten canvas. I've had these for a couple of years now and they've held up well, and they don't have the built in belt.
Cargo shorts are easy to find now, so there's a good chance you can find some good ones out there that aren't "name brand" without paying a lot for them.

I second exofficiato (sorry can't spell)shorts. The best shorts I have. They do have the built in belt though.

I have three pairs of old BDUs that I picked up at second hand stores. Olive Drab, old school jungle camo and newer desert camo. Cut off at the desired length. Are they stylish? Probably not. But they're still pretty sturdy, have lots of pockets, all three cost me less than a tank of gas and SUPER comfy because they're already broken in. I love 'em.

Say what you will about them being Yuppie Poseur stuff, but the Abercrombie and Fitch cargo shorts are awesome.
I don't think they'll ever wear out.
Great earth tone colors, comfy as hell, and nice sized pockets.

I gotta agree with Lenny here. I only have one pair, but my A&F shorts have held up 4 years strong and still look decent. I really like how tough the material is and as mentioned, how deep the pockets are.
