I have a couple of coats, including a Columbia parka, a Columbia shell/inner breakdown parka, Carhartt duck parka that is like an oven in the middle of a blizzard and a London Fog coat. All are great and comfortable to move and work in. I've been using the Columbia inner jacket as my main jacket, leaving coats in my truck or inside except for the absolute dead of winter. The regular Columbia parka stays behind my truck seat, but I've been wanting to put the Columbia breakdown parka together. Looking for a regular coat for the late fall/winter/early spring, I turned to Carhartt. I don't need a jacket with a hood, so I have been looking at the Carhartt Mens Duck Traditional coat. I have to order one because I am rotund, and they don't carry my size in the store (tried one on last night, biggest they had, and it was too tight). I am looking for a durable coat that will look good for work and average social occasions, but will also be durable for work outside. I know these are made in Mexico, my parka is just about perfect and it is made in Mexico. I plan on getting my coat sent to the store, so I can try it on there, if I don't like it or it doesn't fit, I can just get my money back there. Any reviews or suggestions are appreciated.

I have one that's similar to the active jackets, it does have a hood. I wear that one for working outside from about September until April or May. I believe they call those medium weight, there is a liner but not much insulation if any but I have a couple of hooded sweatshirts, one lighter and one heavy that fit real nice underneath so depending on how cold it is, I can layer to suit. The Carhart is great on windy days and on warmer days , I wear it without the hoodie.

I use to like Carhartt, but a lot of their stuff has dropped in quality in my opinion. I've moved over to Duluth Trading Co. Higher prices, but the stuff feels like it's high quality, and performs like it too.

Duluth Trading is a copy cat of Duluth Pack.

I pretty much only wear carhartt, double fronts, shirts, bibs, sweaters, wool socks, winter hats, flannel shirts, coats and jackets. That being said, I'm not a fan of the traditional duck "trucker" jacket, even the tall sizes were never tall enough, and if I went a size up they were too big and they never felt right when I tried to wear them to work.
On the other hand
I do really enjoy the Woodward Quick Duck jacket I picked up this fall. It looks really good and is great to work in since it's got the gusseted shoulders and articulated elbows. AND it's water and wind proof which is pretty cool. I'm 5'10 190 and the medium fits me well.

Great gear,a bit pricy to ship to the uk but well worth it.I have the traditional duck coat along with shirts, pants etc.

The Carhartt stuff I own has served me very well, though I don't own the jacket you are talking about. Duluth Trading and Filson are also favorites of mine. If Filson wasn't so expensive, I would probably buy exclusively from them but, Duluth Trading gives me 90% of Filson quality at 50% of the cost. Carhartt is competitive with Duluth Trading - both companies offer some unique items the other doesn't have.

Most, if not all, of Carhartt's production has been moved overseas including China.

I don't know where you're getting your information. But the Carhartt website has a section for "made in America" There are more than 120 items there...
So lot of Carhartt is actually made in America still. I haven't seen any tags that say China on any of the clothing that I own, and I would not buy it if it did. But yes, much of production has moved to factories in Central and South America.

But now I'm interested in this. I'm going to check this China thing out.

EDIT: Well that didn't take very long, yep Carhartt is "making" things like boots and gloves in China.

None of my Carhartt is made in China, but USA, Mexico, and some other Central American Countries. Ill still wear them, they have a great warranty and never failed me.

Filson is what Carhartt hopes to be when it grows up.

However, Filson can be prohibitively expensive.

Agreed... I'm 18, and work in Washington state building trail in the backcountry for the Washington state conservation corps... I just bought a filson tin cruiser, and have had a pair of double tin bibs for a year now.. I expect them to last me until I'm too fat to fit in them anymore, Then I'll pass them down to my children!

I believe the duluth fire hose stuff IS MADE IN CHINA. I just bought a carhartt that was made in the USA.

Have worn Carhartt for years, after wind, wind chill and water was passing though Duck, I made the switch to Carhartt Extremes/Arctic Quilt-Lined gear moons ago. The Duck is OK for town, dry weather without very low temps and high wind. What ever you wear for the great outdoors layering clothes is better than one heavy coat and a t-shirt. Also protecting/insulating head and feet goes a long ways protecting one from the elements. IMHO

Yes laying is the key,so make sure the coat is loose fitting. Keeping your extremity's protected is a must also. I once knew a man that lost his nose from frostbite.

Speaking of expensive, I email'd them asking if there were going to be any after Christmas sales.
The response was no, but there would be a "Black Friday" sale.
The rep told me that email would go out that day.
I don't know if they'll post it on their site though.
Just go to the site and sign up to be on their email list to be sure you get the sale msg.
I'm Jonesin' after this coat in brown:
