Hi!
Does enybody knows anything about using the Cariboo horn for the knife handles?
How good are they? Are they expencive?
Are they accessable?
I'd appreciate all the info
Thank you
Greg

I recently learned (from a thread on one of these forums) that caribou and reindeer are the same species. Some puukkos have reindeer antler handles, so evidently it works.... I guess you'd work it just like any antler. I have no idea where to get it.

Reindeer and Caribou aren't exactly the same species, but close, I believe reindeert are shorter and stockier, and are from europe. Caribou are from Alaska and Canada. There are places you can get antler from. Heck, My grandad has some for me that I need to pick up still. It isn't the prettiest antler in the world, but it is functional.

FYI, they have the same genus and species name, Rangifer tarandus, so they're scientifically considered one species. They have a circum-polar distribution, so perhaps subspecies are recognized in this large area.

I tried looking up more info on it, but have come up short. There are some size differences, but that is to be expected with a species that has a wide distribution. Reindeer were imported here for ranching purposes, I am as yet unclear as to why reindeer are prefered for ranching (My family name is the name of the land where my great grandmother and grandfather farmed reindeer). The State University in Fairbanks was also doing some hybridization between caribou and reindeer, jokingly calling them "ReinBou" or "Carideer". As with most state projects, the point of their experiment escapes me.

I will try to come up with more info on the subject if I have the chance. Any way you shake it, they are extremely similar (and tasty..).
