Caring for carbon????

The cheapest method is making sure it is dry when you are done using it and then putting a light coat of mineral oil (available for a few bucks at your local drugstore) on it.

Not fancy, but it works.

Just about every knife I own is carbon steel, and thats all I ever do.

Mineral oil seems to be "wonder juice" as far as I'm concerned. It seems to be good for metal, bone, stag, wood, and an OK lubricant. Its even food safe.

By the way, hows it going tarmix?

That's also what I do. I think, at least. I mean, I do use a clear, tasteless oil available from drugstores and originally intended as a basic laxative as knife oil for any knife that might see any food prep. I'm just not sure if it's the same kind of oil you guys call "mineral oil." Is the stuff you call mineral oil by any chance liquid paraffin? If it is, then it's the same stuff I always use. English is bloody difficult sometimes.

Apparently, Elen, liquid paraffin and mineral oil are one and the same!

Who knew? I certainly didn't. And I've been speaking English all my life.

Me starting to talk it real good, too.

I thought that might be the case, but I wasn't sure. I know some folks say paraffin when referring to kerosene or air fuel, which had me all confused about what exactly goes in mineral oil, then.

Elen, if I recall...Paraffin, or paraffin hydrocarbon, is also the technical name for an alkane in general, but in most cases it refers specifically to a linear, or normal alkane — whereas branched, or isoalkanes are also called isoparaffins. It is distinct from the fuel known in Britain and South Africa as paraffin oil or just paraffin, which is called kerosene in much of the U.S., Australia and New Zealand.

Yes, I do believe I am correct! Man, do I know a lot about paraffin!

I don't know much about mineral oil or paraffin, but I do know there was a German scientist who came up with a product from the pimperanella anisium (anise family of plants) called anethol which was an oil used by the German army for weapons, knives, and a raft of other things. This was in 1904 and it is still available today known as Ballistol. It's safe for foods and metals alike. I use it on my knives and muzzleloader both. It'll emulsify with water, then the water evaporates and leaves the oil behind or you can use it straight. I make "moose milk" out of it to clean blackpowder residue, then use it straight to lube and protect. Great stuff!
