I want to share a tip that I got from Corduroy. I was having the old "lateral play" problem on my Carnivore after taking it apart to filework the liners. Corduroy suggested that I try rotating the stop pin to see if that alleviated the problem. Well, I began by taking the knife apart and putting a small mark on the stop pin with a magic marker. Starting at twelve o'clock, I began turning the pin in small increments and putting the knife back together. I did this three or four times (I forget) and sure enough, with the mark at about 6:00 the blade play dissappeared. Thanks again, Corduroy. I continue to be impressed by your vast knowledge of edgy things. Now here's another tip from me. The G10 scales have a recess cut to accommodate the stop pin and the pivot pin. This recess is just a smidge too deep, which is why some of you hear the "rattle" of the pin. I fixed this by folding aluminum foil until it was just thick enough to put pressure on the pin, then trimmed it with a scissors (you've seen them--two knives bolted together

)so that it fit perfectly into the recess. No more rattle. (is this where all of you have been putting the drop of glue? Um...yeah, I guess that would work too.) Still lovin' my Carny-

I know it might detract some enjoyment from those do-it-yourselfers out there but this corduroy guy should set up shop here on BF as a folding REKAT tune-up man.

He wouldn't starve, that's for sure! He also does some cool modifications to Starmates, AFCK's, and pretty much any other folder. Really top-notch work.

ptpalpha,
Is it you who did the Carnivour tune up? I can't remember who it was, but I wanted to thank him, or you or whoever it was.
I took the plunge the other day and disassembled my Carny and did the tune up. I polished the tang, polished the inside of the scales, lopped off about 20% of the spring, and cleaned up the gunk in the mechanism.
Ooohhh BABY! What a difference!

Grittiness is 99% gone and she flicks open like a well lubed Spydie linerlock.
While I was at it, I mounted the clip on the pivot end of the knife. I am really liking this mode of carry, and it's been a burr in my bonnet that my Carnivour was tip up. She's tip DOWN now

and I'm in love all over again! WOOHOO!!

I took mine apart, polished the tang, shortened the spring, and cleaned the washers. I even polished the inside of the scales and the part of the blade that touches the washers. Mine is very smooth now and luckily I didn't get any vertical play after putting it together.

OK, I give up. What does shortening the spring do? Is it just to keep it from flinging across the room, or does it improve the knife's action somehow? (i.e. you know I've got to do it, just tell me why I'm doing it!

Before I shortened mine it would occasionally get in a bind and effect the lock mechanism. I also noticed that on my new Carnivore the spring is shorter from the factory.

Thanks, Dennis. I think I'll leave mine alone unless it starts to exhibit signs of binding.

Paul,
I really think that shortening the spring has helped to smooth out the action. I could be wrong as I did the other parts of the "tune up" all at the same time, but the results were well worth the effort. That is, of course, after I found the spring, which flew across the room like an escaped bat outta Hell when I opened the thing.

Pissed me off, because I knew this was gonna happen and I was ready for it. I thought. And away it went anyway.:O DOH!!
Well, anyway, I think shortening the spring helped. If you decide to do it, let me know how it turns out.
BTW Don't lop off more than apprx. 20% or there could be lock up problems.
