Called carpenter yesterday, was thinking about getting some of their CTS-XHP
steel to try, an air hardening stainless tool steel!?
However- at this time there is a 500lb MINIMUM ORDER FROM THE MILL definetly not catering to the small time knife makers.
Guess I'll try Sandvak

We could put together a group order maybe? I'll take 10 pounds of the stuff.

CTS-XHP Description said:
Air hardening, high carbon, high chromium, corrosion resistant alloy which can be described as either a high hardness Type 440C stainless steel or a corrosion resistant D2 tool steel. Possesses corrosion resistance equivalent to Type 440C stainless but can attain a maximum hardness of 64 HRC, approaching that of D2 tool steel.

This proprietary alloy is in the Carpenter CTS™ family of alloys that offer superior edge retention and surface finish, an ability to be machined to a fine edge, and consistent heat-treatability from lot to lot. Consider CTS alloys for many blade applications including commercial food processing, paper processing, textile, packaging, recycling/refuse, kitchen knives, hand tools, scissors/shears, shaving razors, sport/hunting knives, ice skates, military/defense, law enforcement, salon blades and various surgical/medical applications.

Spend your efforts better by supporting Crucible. They certainly have supported the knife industry and make many excellent blade steels.

The Crucible that supported the knifemakers is no longer in existence. Some of the good people are still around and still supporting the business but as for the company it is broken up. Niagara Specialty Metals has the exclusive for sheet CPM and make excellent 440C and such. They haven't got a formal plan for servicing the market but they have the capability. Latrobe just announced they were in an agreement with new owners of the old Crucible mill to convert and sell CPM rounds and plate through Latrobe's distribution group. Latrobe has supported the knifemakers somewhat but not as extensive as old Crucible did. When the old girl went belly up it essentially got sold off in many pieces and the people are scattered to the wind. Shame

Do you ever what ever happened to S35VN? The steel is being used in knives but nobody seems to know anything about it as Crucible went belly up before they could introduce it.

We will have 154-CM, CPM S35VN and the rest of the CPM lineup on the shelf by the first week of February. We plan to stock all of the Crucible knife grades for resale in our plant. We also plan to support the smaller distributers as well. We have requested and got approval yesterday to sub license several distributers such as Mid West Knife Supply, Tru Grit, and Alpha Knife Supply to name a few. SB Industries has also been approved. They bought the Crucible warehouses and have several key people on staff to help. You can go to www.nsm-ny.com for current pricing on the request page.

Our goal is to make sure that everyone who wants CPM or 154-CM steel can get it when they want it and in the size and quantity they want.
