I have been all over google and the internet trying to get a simple answer to a simple question. Is it legal or not to possess an assisted opening or automatic knife in Hawaii. I plan on traveling there shortly and am well versed in the gun laws, but not knife laws.

§134-52 Switchblade knives; prohibitions; penalty.
(a) Whoever knowingly manufactures, sells, transfers,
possesses, or transports in the State any switchblade
knife, being any knife having a blade which opens
automatically (1) by hand pressure applied to a button
or other device in the handle of the knife,
or
(2) by operation of inertia, gravity, or both, shall be
guilty of a misdemeanor.

If I read the bolded portion correctly, assisted openners are illegal. What do others think?

Legalese.

Assisted opening knives do not operate via a device in the handle, they are activated during the initial movement of the blade. The initial movement is by a flipper on the blade or a stud on the blade (like most "tactical" knives possess).

They should be legal by that code.

Which of the "assisted openers" has a lever on the side of the hilt for starting the opening?

Ithagan, it appears that your table assumes, at least for Virginia, that concealed carry of a switchbade would be legal if you have a concealed carry pistol permit.I live in Virginia and would very much like to carry a switchblade. Also, on what basis do you see it as legal to carry a switchblade openly? And would carrying it clipped in your pocket count as "open carry"?

Please understand that I am not challenging you. I am interested in seeing if I can really carry one.
