I personally don't buy anything I would be afraid to carry, whether it is a first run or limited run, etc. I really don't think most production knives are going to appreciate in value to much of an extent. They are made to be used and carried. This also includes customs, IMHO. I would enjoy the knife. That's what you bought it for.;)

I have used every first run knife I have ever owned. Sure it reduced their possible resale value, but I really didn't care. Quite often I bought the first run knives because they were made from better materials and would, in my opinion, make better users. I never bought them for investment or as a collector.

Being that it is one of only two hundred being made, this may well be a knife that goes up in value. In fact, it probably will. Al Mar knives are very popular and the older ones are very collectable. The newer ones just might become collectable as well. I am not a collector of these knives and really don't have a clue as to whether the current day Al Mar knives are popular with collectors or not. Maybe Melvin Purvis will see this thread and add his opinion. He is a collector of Al Mar knives and is very knowledgeable about them.

Thanks...I am not a collector or buying to re-sell...I buy what I like but when I saw that this was a 1st production run knife I don't want to be stupid and use it if it is worth more to someone who might be a collector...thanks and I'll await a reply hopefully from Melvin Purvis.

If you're not willing to store it in a safe for 5 or more years to see and increase in value of 0-75% (my estimate only), I would say use it. If you are not a collector then your probably not going to want to tie up that knife money long enough for the value to increase.

70% or more of my production knives are limited or numbered in some way and I carry them all of the time, I'm carrying a 1 of 37 made Benchmade today.

I look at it this way, if it's not going to inclrease in value I get a lot of use out of what I paid for it. If it does increase in value than I can use it well for a couple of years and maybe sell it for what I paid for it. Either way I win... :)

I used to protect all of my toys, but I now want to enjoy them. Sure, I have fancy and expensive drawer-queens in my collection, but I want to use more of my collection.

Case in point, I own #049 of the Strider SnG2 series, that's the one with the stonewashed blade. Only the first 100 are numbered.
It's in my jeans right now as I type, and it cuts when needed, even a fat, salty Arby's burger once.

I can hear some guy out there wince. He's a guy who has lusted over a Strider, saved his pennies and now this he finds out that some old biker is cutting burgers with his knife!

It could be worse for that guy. I have a Strider AR that was made of obscure pieces to finish an order. Mick tells me only FIVE were made, and I have ONE of them!

Use it or lose it. I mean that if you are not going to use it than sell it and get one you will. That is just how I do things though.

I have a one-of-200 AMK S2k that I have used almost exclusively as my heaviest duty folder. I dont really consider knives as financial investments, but more along the line of tools to be used and cared for. If they appreciate in value, great, but I have'nt sold a knife in my life, and it is too late to start now.

I have several AMKs from when Al was alive that I have chosen to retire NIB, but I didnt buy them for that purpose.

I recently picked up one of the first Buck/Strider spearpoints(the biggest, honkinest one), and it is etched "1st Production Run" and also serial #55/500. I carry it and use it. Not at work here in the Govt building(as I don't feel like undergoing multiple cavity searches), but I do carry, sharpen and use it. I love it, because it is one of the 500 that have BG42 blades with the Bos heat treat.
