Carry a Knife - Save a Life™

A 6-year-old Texas boy is recovering after being attacked by a mountain lion while walking with his family in Big Bend National Park.

"It had a hold of his face ... . the cat was clamped on his face," the father said. "I reached down and got my knife out and stabbed the cat in the chest and it let go at that point.

His father Jason told the TV station the family was on a sidewalk between a restaurant and hotel when the mountain lion struck

While a knife may not be ideal, it sure beats fighting a big cat/bear with your fingernails and teeth! Thanks!

Knives are dangerous and they turn people into criminals. You guys gotta get your thinkin' straight.

Nice job, I had to stab a 200 pound plus dog once. I gut luck and only got scratched. I stabbed three times as hard as I could at the spinal column. Not easy to do when he is growling and moving so fast. Second one paralyzed him. I humanely it decapatated with machete.

Musta been a desperate cat. Glad to hear that the kid survived. Having a hungry mountain lion on your face would purely be a bad day.

Knife is a tool, plane and simple...it is always better and in this situation luckily they were. Good story.

You know what what really save a life?

If someone would take the Benchmade Barrage family of spring assisted knives and make the blades out of D2, S30V, or M390.

With G10 scales.

If only we knew someone who could make that happen.

Generally, my knife wouldn't be the first thing I'd go for if attacked by an animal. I'd use pepper spray first. On a couple of occasions, I've sent a dog that attacked me when I was out running off yelping with his tail between his legs with a shot of Sabre.

However, since the mountain lion was already clamped to the boys face I suppose the knife was the better option in this case.

I am sure that many here are puzzled by how this even took place.

No special knife was needed. No log batoning, 8 lb night battle mistress with special micarta handles for gripping in the snow was needed. No tanto pointed, electrocoated spring opened special ops was needed. No trip to the bug out bag or the SHTF box hidden under the seat of the car to get the proper equipment.

This is a perfect example of a man using his head and the tool at hand, and having success. Proof that when the SHTF as the boys like to say, you probably just won't be ready no matter how much gear you tote. Glad this guy was. No doubt he saved the boy's life.

Me and my girlfriend seen this on the news last night. She looked over at me and said "Hmmm, I guess it's good you always carry a knife." I knew she would come around sooner or later :D

Very true. But gear companies can't make money off brain power ;)
