I have found myself carrying both a "nice knife" and a "beater".
Nice knife= Caly 3 CF ZDP
Beater= Mini Grip 555HG This thing can take some punishment but still looks new.

I usually carry a nice knife (that I definitely use, but not abusively) and a small SAK that has tools for jobs like prying and turning screws, etc. that would be considered abusive (beater) tasks if done using a nice blade.

My Blade Tech RIJBAK does most of my delicate and my beater tasks. I do carry a Charge TTi and a Vic Farmer for prying tasks.

I don't carry for "nice vs beater", but I do carry a couple of different knives for different tasks. I usually have a small Sebbie in RFP and lately an SnG IWB (previously a Para-Millie). They just do different things, but they're both users.

I, too, carry different knives for different tasks. However, I have no real interest in "nice" knives. They all earn their keep.

I don't carry a nice vs. beater knife either. I DO carry a folder and a pocket fixed blade.

like to carry a big knife for self defense, and a smaller beater type for utility and use around people.

i like to carry something bigger like spyderco military, cold steel voyager, spyderco chinook, kershaw g10 speedbump for SD, and then either a byrd robin, serrated spyderco salt1, or also my mini-grip for utility and use around people.

I generally have two knives, but not to use one as a "beater."
In one pocket, I usually have a one-hander for tough jobs, or for when I only have one hand to get out my knife (happens at work pretty frequently). Today I'm carrying a Spyderco Paramilitary.
In my back pocket, I usually have a slipjoint of moderate size (today, it's a Queen Copperhead). This one gets used for food, opening boxes, indoor situations where a smaller knife is appropriate.
Then again, my job is about 50/50 office time and boat time. In the office I use the slipjoint more, and out on the boats I tend to use the one-hander more often.

My "beater" is a CF/ZDP Caly 3. My nice knife is a Victorinox Super Tinker.

I like the way you think.

I don't carry a beater knife, but I always have a few inches of Spyderco's SE if things get tough. Lately a SE Cricket is lurking as back up, sometimes a SE Caly 3.

Not sure if I have had a need for prying in a very very loooong time.

Since I always have a multi with a serated blade , I have a beater , an something I might loan out . Multis also seem to occupy a null zone with the sheeple .

I keep a cheap lockback on me at all times.. perfect for non knife people..... I say
"Go ahead and cut through that metal strap":D

i carry a native and a gerber box cutter for a beater. I done destroyed alot a good knifes until i started carring a beater and using my other one on certain jobs! i can buy cheap razor blades not knifes!

The multitool blade is the beater, the Kershaw Groove is my "nice knife". Although its more about the jobs than the condition the blades are in. The Kershaw is so sharp I might chip or roll the edge if I screw up, but no worries on the multi.:D

as above i carry an old leatherman sideclip for the abusive stuff and a sodbuster or a peanut for cutting. I've carried 2 knives of one pattern or another for over 20 odd years. works well.

I've been alternating between a 556 mini grip for work (construction stuff) and a Ritter mini grip. The 556 has been used as a glass breaker, and you can tell by looking at the butt of the knife.

I'm trying to hold off a bit before I really scratch up the Ritter. Looking into getting a small SAK as a loaner/fingernail cleaner/friendly knife.
