Carry at a hockey game?

I have tickets to Sunday's Redwings game@ Joe Louis Arena. I know I can't carry a pistol due to the capacity of the venue. My question is; Can I carry a folding knife with the Detroit legal <3" blade? As far as I know they have metal detectors (walk through, not sure how sensitive) I carry a small surefire light, and am planning on carrying a small Emerson (not sure which)

I just want to make sure I don't get an expensive knife taken, and I don't want to be in the city without any self defense option.

Not to get off subject but you cant carry a pistol at large venues? Is there a capacity cut off? Do all states have this law?

FL does. weapons permit does not apply at sporting events (akaik). nor polling places, gvt buildings, places of nuisance.

Probably not. The arenas are private property and you are subject to their rules.

At the staples center I have to leave mine in the car.

In Michigan if capacity is greater than 2,500(I think, could be 2,000) you can't carry.(Doesn't apply to off-duty LEO)
I'll be securing my pistol in the vehicle. I am just concerned about carrying a folding knife. I'm not worried about the actual rules of the venue, I just don't want to break any laws/lose a knife. I suppose if I am really that worried about it I can have my wife put it in a small pocket of her purse. I'm mostly concerned about being "naked" to and from the car.

I've never had them find a knife that I had with me at the Joe. So I can't tell you what you should do.

Whenever I go to the joe, my pocket knife somehow ends up in my steel toed boots and when they wand over my boots it goes off of course. I tell them I have steel toed boots on before I walk through, and usually they just wand everywhere else on me and let me go. One time they wanded my boots to make sure they were steel toed and then did not wand anywhere else on me (this was smart). I've never been asked to take them off, and I'm unsure of what the actual policy is.

Perhaps call Olympia security and ask them?

You'd probably have time to run back to the car if you need to if they do find it, I have to imagine they would let you.

There's also the big belt buckle trick. Go score a big metal western style belt buckle and then put the knife IWB behind it, right along the zipper. Since the wand is so big it's hard to pinpoint the source of the signal and they would not necessarily notice the knife behind the buckle. Of course if they ask you to take off the belt it wouldnt work. I've never used this trick at the Joe, so I can't tell you anything about how it would work.

Having your wife hide it in her purse would likely be a good option, make sure she has some other metal stuff in there that could conceivably be the source if they do make her walk it through the detector.

I've also never been to a playoff game, so I don't know if they increase security procedures.

coldsteel nightshade?

I keep a couple of models of Cold Steel's "Nightshade" line of non-metallic knives on hand for such occasions. Walk right through the metal detector without a problem and no one is the wiser!;)

We parked in the Joe Louis Garage so I just put my Emerson Karambit in my front pocket. My wife went through the detector first, I figured if anyone said anything to me I would play ingnorant and run back to the car if I had to. I just walked through and that was it, no problems. We sat right behind Kid Rock, which was a bit odd, but it was cool to see him share a bag of peanuts with the little girl who had the seat next to him. Wings played great and won, we got home with no issues so it was a great day.

Has nothing to do with capacity, though. Government buildings are not off limits in Florida.

technically, that is correct. however, enough Gvt. buildings are listed in the statute that very few are left. i guess you could carry at the library or water dept, but there really aren't many others that don't get mentioned in the statute.

and i realize the sporting event restriction has nothing to do with capactiy, but (at a hockey game) the end result would be the same.

Not that many government buildings. Schools, police stations, jails, courthouses and polling places. That's all.

and any place where any governing body is meeting, right?

not trying to be argumentative, i'm really curious, how many government building are left? what all is owned by the gvt that does NOT fall into one of these catagories? i can think of the library and the water dept. whatelse is there?

County administration buildings, for one. The law says you can't carry at ameeting. It does not say you can't carry in a building.

these are all mentioned in the section.

zero is saying there are few buildings not mentioned that may apply, correct?

So walked right through a metal detector with an Emerson Karambit and the thing didn't even go off? What's the point of having a metal detector in the first place? Just to make sure nobody carries in a main battle tank?

Security is such a joke. I hate metal detectors.
