Carry considerations in China

I'll be in China next week and was considering bringing something to carry around with me, I just hate not having some sort of knife with me. Anyone know of any restrictions or considerations? I'll be in Shanghai for a couple of days, then out in the countryside the rest of the time.

I've never had any problems with Swiss Armys and other small, non-locking pocket knives in China. Just forget "self-defense" or anything of that nature. In general, I felt safer on most Chinese streets than in say NYC. They don't mess around over there with criminals. Mostly it is always a matter of not standing out or causing problems. They are not looking to bother obvious tourist that are behaving themselves.

Play it VERY safe, SAK or similar sounds like a good idea. Remember, in China, they don't exactly think like we do in terms of people actually having rights to due process, trial, counsel or well really rights in general.

If you don't believe me, watch Red Corner!

Like I said, don't stand out. I was there during the period when they were having a lot of terrorist knife attacks. They had hundreds of troops and cops on the streets, snipers on the buildings, riots squads every where and swat teams at every major corner. The last thing you would want to do is have them take a second look at you.
