I'm going to be driving up to visit my brother in Jesey and will probably be making a trip to New York while I'm there. I know I can easily look at the written carry laws per state, but I would also like to get the experience from people who live there on if and what I can safely carry without risking getting into trouble up north.

I usually carry a 0550 and also have a 0200. The 0560CBCF will not be going on the trip. Would the 0550 be asking for trouble or would I be alright? If not, I might have to commandeer my old Cryo back from my son temporarily. Thanks ahead of time for any helpful input.

Whichever you carry be sure to keep it dropped in your pocket.
A visible clip is reason enough for a stop and frisk.
also be wary of blades that can be flipped open as they will use that as aa charge against you.

But as long as you don't cause trouble you should be ok.
just practice a bit of common sense.

Enjoy your trip and stay safe.

Dan

All three knives, the 200, 550, and especially the cryo, are verboten in NYC. DA Vance has been reinterperting the gravity knife statue to include almost all locking knives. He has also been defining "carried openly" as "visible pocket clip". Add to that the NYPD stop-and-frisk policy, and the hodge-podge of other LE organizations in the city, and the chances of getting stopped suck.

A non-locking folder, deep pocket carried, is a safer option: i.e. a traditional slip joint (i.e. barlow, jack, jr. sodbuster, etc), SAK, and (maybe) the Spyderco UKPK and slip-its.

Damn. I feel sorry for you guys who have to put up with that bullshit on a daily basis. I guess I will take my ZT 0550 and it will stay in my luggage. I'm not risking carrying it and getting hassled for it. Well I'm going to feel naked. I usually carry it everywhere. How about a tactical flashlight that has a strike bezel on it? Would I get hassled for that too?

No idea. However, consider that a large chunk of the NYC public transit system is underground. Carrying a 2 cell AA or CR123 penlight would be a good idea in terms of general preparedness.

In NYS ( and NYC) anything designed for use as a weapon is then a dangerous instrument and illegal. A flash light is not illegal, but one designed as a weapon "could be". A locking blade under 4" ( in NYC) is not illegal unless it can be flicked open and locks open automatically. Opinels in size 7, 8 and maybe 9 seem to be legal. Then can lock with the additional manual twist of the collar, and they can be locked shut with the same collar. Small non locking folders are legal when not carried as a weapon. There are of course many NYC officers who ( wrongfully) feel all knives are illegal, and many sites you may want to visit have a no knife policy on private property.

Had to do a search of those numbers to see what knives you were talking about!. I personally would not go into NYC with any kind of tactical folder. New Jersey may be just as bad now. Go with a nice traditional and keep it in your pocket.
