Carry laws for Atlanta?

Atlanta has some weird laws. Folding knives with blades over 2" that lock open are illegal, while fixed-blades up to 3" are legal. Plus, automatics are legal with blades up to 2"!

I think the Blade Show is outside of the city limits though.

I also posted this in the Practical/Tactical forum:

Georgia Code 16-11-127. Except as provided in Code Section 16-11-127.1, a person is guilty of a misdemeanor when he carries to or while at a public gathering any explosive compound, firearm, or knife designed for the purpose of offense and defense.

it looks like they kind of threw the knife part in there for the heck of it. This section of the law came from packing.org and has to do with getting a CCW permit. I was doing some research on concealed carry and saw it. Makes you think...who decides what is "the purpose of offense or defense"?

If you are going to the Blade Show I wouldn't worry too much about it, as far as the area around the show. You will see people wearing all kinds of knives, swords, tomahawks, etc around the show. Some friends of mine and I got some weird looks at one of the restaurants in the Galleria one year, because we were passing around all kinds of stuff (including a large Maringer vorpal knife/sword). Nobody said a thing though.

I have family down there and go down at least once a year anyway. I always have some sort of locking knife longer than 2" clipped to my pocket, or on my belt. I've never gotten even a dirty look from the law down there. As long as you are behaving responsibly I wouldn't worry. Parts of downtown Atlanta (far from the Blade Show) are very high crime areas. Mail doesn't even get delivered, because so many carriers were assaulted. I imagine these areas are the reason for those laws existing. That doesn't mean that they won't be enforced elsewhere, but the Atlanta PD have more to worry about than checking the length of peoples blades.

As cerulean said, I think the Blade Show is outside the city limits. I'm pretty sure the Chattahoochee the marks the city limit on US-41.

Be careful driving around there. Running red lights seems to have become a sport down there in the last few years.

Paul,

You are right, most ATL PD do have better things to do. But, I wouldn't generalize too much. There is always the possibility that (as unlucky as some of us seem to be, me included) you'll come up against a stickler cop that won't let it go. I have absolutely nothing against ATL law enforcement, but as the city gets more violent, the police tend to be less and less forgiving.

Steve2- Just be careful, ruin my whole day to hear you got in trouble.

Atlanta laws are in fact much more strict that the rest of the state. The show is not in the City limits of Atlanta. Conduct yourself well and there is no problem in the show area (from auto's to broadswords). If I go to Atlanta proper in an area where there is a possibility of trouble about the only way to stay within Atlanta law is to obtain a CCL. The State laws are pretty much unrestricted if the knife is not concealed and as long as school property is not invloved.

Being in the wrong place at the wrong time within the city limits without a concealed carry permit and something bigger than a "pen knife" could lead to trouble.
