Carry Options for a Fighter

I asked this over in Sheaths and Such but that sub forum doesn't get as much traffic as this one. I didn't want to derail the "Let Me See Some Fighters" thread either which is mostly a gallery.

I recently finished a fighting style knife. Blade is 6&5/8", OAL is 11&5/8". I am currently in the process of designing a sheath for it and I'm considering different carry/deployment options.

My intention is to make a leather sheath for this one. I could just make a standard type sheath where the blade is inserted up to the guard. I can insert the blade a bit deeper where the top of the sheath wraps over the guard a bit for retention, like a Kydex sheath. I can use a belt loop, a static line, a belt stud, eyelets for attaching to a Molle strap or backpack strap or other kit. There are lots of options.

I am not a badass. I do not play one on tv. I make knives but have no experience fighting with them or using them in a professional capacity. Since this knife was designed more as a fighter I am looking for folks with knife fighting training or experience, or folks who carry knives as part of their professional kit to offer some opinions as to the more practical, logical, useful, efficient ways to carry or mount a knife. I am aware that weight matters and that a lot of people will not carry a fixed blade of this size and prefer a folder. We are assuming for my purposes that this style knife will be carried. I am not talking strictly military. Think bodyguard, self defense, law enforcement, whatever.

I have no knife fight experience (thank God :)) but in the compulsory military service, we worn our service knives strapped to the vest. I think the carry mode will depend a lot on the preference and type of service (necessary gear and so on). Generally I think a kydex sheath would be preferred for practical use and also for the ease of adjusting/modding the carry option. If doing a leather sheath I would add some eyelets for the same reason (buyer could then add a strap or clip with some chicago screws).

Joe Paranee who knows a lot more than me on this topic recommends horizontal carry. I just did a sheath for an 11” blade, and almost went horizontal, but the customer wanted vertical. It seems like a very impractical thing to carry vertically.

You might take a look at some of Bill Bagwell's U-tube videos. He carries a Bowie knife with a 10"+ blade.

Marc, have you seen Ben Tendick’s carry rig?
That looks like a cool idea. Not sure if that would be practical for your blade, but definitely a neat way to carry.

One good option would be to make a sheath with no attachment loops. Just a plain sheath with gromets at the top and tip.. They can stick it in their waistband or lash it to their moly gear as-is. If a specific carry style is desired, you or the owner can make a fitted collar/sleeve that will allow any carry style desired.

Josh, That was a while ago. Now that I've seen it again I remember seeing it.

Stacy, I like that idea. That was one of my initial instincts, to go for something modular. Plain and simple but easily adaptable to different mounts.

Hengelo_77,
You can see the blade here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CAIx2iNj1yp/

Thanks Tom,
I took a look at a bunch of those videos. My 6.5" bladed knife might be a little short for that style.

6” is actually the minimum. With that broad blade, it would probably do well with a Southern Comfort. The broad blade will keep it stable IWB.

Keep in mind when sheathing, the more multipurpose you make the sheath, the less it will excel at any particular carry method.
