Carry Options for GB Mini Belt Hatchet

Any suggestions for carrying on the belt? I don't feel real comfortable simply running the little strappy part of the sheathy thingy around belt or loop. How do you guys carry it when it's not just stowed in a pack? Thanks! William

The mini's strap is too small for going around your belt in my experience. I just tuck it in the belt loose. I did that on a 5 mile hike with my CS trail hawk. Seems to not move at all but it could be my chubbiness keeping it stable. I DO use a wilderness gun belt so that probably helps keeping it stable also. The only other option would be to have a new sheath made that has actual belt loops.

If mines not in the day pack, it's because I'm using it, so I'll be carrying it in my hand.

When the jobs done, it goes back in the day pack.

Kind regards
Mick

I dont have the GB mini, but my Fiskars gets stowed when im not usin it.

What do you think of the Mini out of curiosity? Ive looked at em, but I just cant see spendin that much dinero on such a small axe. Im eyeballin a Wetterlings Bushcraft axe at the moment, but im wondering if there is something im missing with the GB?? Is it really a good tool with it being so small??

Depends on what you want it for. To me, the GB is the best "survival knife." It out chops a knife of similar weight and does fine work better as well. IMO it's better at being the one tool than a large chopper knife. The other upside of it is the weight savings. If you're backpacking and want a chopper it's great for that as well.

If however, you're car camping and/or want to process lots of wood, I wouldn't recomend it. I did a very unscientific comparison of the GB mini against the Gerber 14" hatchet and although the Gerber did outperform it, it was marginal. I really think that if you need more chopping power than the GB can give you that you should skip the hatchet and go straight to a 3/4 axe.

My experience with the Mini is pretty much the same as Shotgun's as I'm not into large chopper knives. The Mini will surprise you at how much it can do for its size...size being the main advantage, it packs easily and offers a lot of versatility.

I carry it as Mick mentioned, in the pack when not in use...I haven't found an advantage to trying to carry it on my belt because when I'm using it my packs already off my back. As has been mentioned, this is not a substitute for a larger axe and serious wood processing, but for around camp and kindling prep it's fine.

Dirttime Dude over on Hoodlums, had a chest rig made for his, looks great, and doesn't interfere with a pack. He used to post here, might still have contact info.

Whilst it's no chopping powerhouse, I've found it to be a very versatile outdoor tool that I like a lot

I find it more than capable of spliting limbs up for kindling...

...works well at stripping bark for shelters..

It is a very good carving hatchet that is comfortable in a variety of grips

I think the mini is very cool.

Besides my Reeves Nessmuk it is the hatchet I probably use the most for backpacking because of the light weight.

The key for the mini is to place your chops and slightly whip the thing right before impact like you would do a khukuri.

As hollowdweller said, snapping or flicking your wrist at the end of the strike does add more of a punch. A game me and my brother played as little boys was getting cow muck on the end of a stick and flicking it at each other, that's the type of motion I use with the mini!

i always carry my mini in the day pack. as to the quality & expense --i took a newbie to the boonies last sun. he had never fired a gun we shot some turtles with his 12 ga. & then he wanted to try same slugs on the trash trees growing by the river. after all the chopping to retrieve the expanded slugs, [he wanted to show expansion to friends] i pulled up my pants leg & showed him the mini would still shave hair. in my opinion that quality edge holding is worth the money.
