carry preference...

My first knife I carried regularly was a Kershaw Blackout which is tip down only. I got used to it and for many years that's the only way I would carry a knife. About 3 years ago I bought my first Emerson which is only tip up, and I've been carrying knives that way ever since. I've gotten so used to tip up carry I switch all the clips to carry that way and won't buy a knife that isn't tip up. It's more muscle memory than anything else.

I never really thought much about which end was up until I got into bigger folders. I've noticed lately I'm leaning towards tip up, it seems to ride better. And I don't feel the thumb stud when I put my hands in my pockets. Just trying to see what the general positives and negatives are from others.

Tip up.
Because I can reach into my pocket and deploy my knife with one hand in an instant if need be. My thumb naturally lands on the thumb stud and it's feels like a natural grip on the knife.it is also easier to open for me as opposed to the small amount of hand acrobatics needed to flip the knife and then open.
Don't get me wrong, tip down carry is still lightning fast, just consider it the epitome of laziness that I try to avoid the extra step necessary to get the knife out and ready.
I've never had a tip up carry knife open in my pocket but I've read that it happens and can understand that people want to avoid chopping their fingers off when jamming their hand in their pocket next to their knife.

I'll sum it up as personal preference and laziness.

Very good point. Laziness works in a lot of ways...if it helps in technique and a more fluid deployment, I'm all for it

If you use the search feature, you will find many, many threads on this. Recent ones too. Tip up only for the last 10+years.

I only carry traditional folders so I just drop it in a pocket with everything else.
I had a spooky experiance a few years ago when a Case russlock opened half way in my pocket. You want to talk about removing a knife from your pocket very, very carefully!

Hi all,

I, too, have had a couple of interesting moments with folders opening while in my pocket. Not a good thing....

I now carry a traditional slip joint in my pocket, but have also started carrying a Dozier "Slim Outdoorsman" in
a horizontal kydex sheath. It's nice having a small fixed blade at hand.

Best,
Wendell

Tip Down! ( or I don't even consider buying the knife )

I carry in my right side back pocket along side my wallet and tip down provides proper hand placement (thumb in the hole or on the stud) for an open knife when it reaches my front side. I've tried tip up but find myself having to fumble with the knife to get it in a position to open.
