Carry Suggestions for 25" AK?

I've tried wearing this beast on my belt a few times, and even though the weight isn't too bad, the scabbard hits my legs, making walking uncomfortable. I thought about making a modified superfrog that holds the scabbard canted at an angle so it doesn't bash my legs, but I'm not sure if it would work. I'm thinking that the weight of the blade would pull it down into my legs no matter what kind of frog I have on there. Maybe a shoulder strap would be a better option. Has anyone found a comfortable and practical method of belt carry for larger khukuris?

I saw a late-night info-mercial a while back that promoted a motorized wheelbarrow....

I was going to say something smart a$$ed, but Terry Sisco has a baldric shoulder-style rig on his website.

Tohatchi--thanks--that looks like it might do the trick. Probably wouldn't raise as many eyebrows as the Nepali porter or motorized wheelbarrow.

Never mind the baldric. I just did a search for motorized wheelbarrows. These things are awesome! Uncle Bill, do you think I could train a Nepali porter to use one of these things and still maintain a respectful three-pace distance behind me?:D

Although I'm having a hard time visualizing it, could you somehow carry in on your back, with the handle extending up for your grasp?

(I have all these images of ears being sliced off.)

But if the baldric/carry strap were diagonally across your back, it would support the khuk. The problem I'm having imagining it, is the bend of the khuk would inhibit (or prohibit) withdrawing the blade.

The suspension system of the frog for sabers, etc... was probably developed for just this reason.

Sorry, not much help.

One thing about the khuk-in-a-baldric idea...

I was wearing a homemade version of one and not only did it raise more than a handful of eyebrows on the camping trip, but one guy asked me if I was security for the evenings events.

I then proceeded to pull out the knife and demonstrate a few chopping skills and suddenly he found himself wanting one...:D

Kismet-- I thought about back carry, but I really don't like the idea of not being able to see the blade and/or hold the scabbard as I withdraw the blade. I'm kinda partial to my ears:rolleyes: . It would definitely look cool, though.

Pendentive-- I think I've already got the neighbors terrified into submission with the khukuris; they probably wouldn't even notice the baldric :D Just out of curiosity, how did you make your homemade version? Is it just a leather shoulder strap attached to the frog with rings or somesuch?

similar to Sarge's setup here:

Thanks! That looks like it would work perfectly, though it's still not as exciting as the motorized wheelbarrow.

A baldric, for me anyway, is the preferred way to carry anything over 12" long. No poking in the leg, or flapping around as I'm bounding down the mountain, etc. Plus, since I'm used to carrying a bag on one shoulder anyway (I have for the last 13 years) it seems right at home. Out of the way and easy to get to.

Personally I'm not using a leather strap as wide as in the pic, as it makes it more difficult to "swing it around" when you want to unsheath it. The trade-off is a skinny strap that digs into the shoulder, so I've put a nice pad on the strap.

I'm a shoulder bag person myself. I don't have any problems with even my 18" AK's on my belt, but the 25" is just too long. If I went for an extended hike, the side of my leg would be black and blue.

I was thinking that I would make my baldric out of some thick leather, but you bring up a good point about being able to swing it around. I'll probably opt for some thinner leather with a leather shoulder pad.

Am I the only one who doesnt like big knives strapped to them? I always carry big knives/swords in my hand, rested on my shoulder, like you would a rifle. If I do need to tuck it somewhere, it goes in the front, like a good Filipino Farmer, through the belt not on it.

Perhaps like a sword on a bandolier. Too heavy for a belt without possibly LBE with the suspenders. Might work.

I've got one of Terry's baldrics. Works really well. And with a bit of added engineering it can be set up so that a) you can swap other khukuris / long stuff on it for carry (that way you also won't need to ship your khukuri to Terry for a custom fitting unless you want a custome baldric) and b) using a normal waist belt through a loop to stabalize the whole rig, you can even carry a Tawar, Tibetian sword or a long Khukuri on your back Conan the Barbarian style. Sarge's idea of putting an O ring on it so the khukuri swivels our of the way when you sit down is a good idea, too.

Always meant to post pictures but I still haven't gotten my digital camera set up working yet.

Hope this helps!
