I was just wondering what you guys that carry big blades do for carry rigs. I ordered a SYKCO 711 and need a sheath for it. I usually just throw big blades in my pack but in the summer I don't always have a pack on me. Most of my use will be around camp but I do want something that would be comfy for day hikes. What's a comfy way to carry these guys? Dangler, high riding, drop leg, baldric...?

I threw my 711 into a spec ops large sheath, it fits perfect and has a little pouch on the front for something else (i usually have a light or some other gadget in it)
I keep it in my bag til I think I'm gonna use it. it hangs low enough off the belt to be out of the way of any backpack waist straps and has a tie down to keep it from flopping around. It's pretty hard to beat unless you were to go for a full custom set up :)

I think the weight may also make it suitable for carrying horizontally behind the back if you're not wearing a pack, I can't see it getting in the way or being too heavy

I've carried my Chopweiler horizontal style in the small of my back using a Kydex sheath. Very comfy and very discreet when sheeple are around.

Strap it to the backpack, for around camp or short hikes, I think it's what fits best for you. I've had some uncomfortable sheaths, those high riding ones where the handle sticks above the belt. Which gets in the way of the backpack too.

I like low slung sheaths.

Here's one for a Scrap Yard 7-11:

Made another in EMS Blue for her hubby...

Do horizontal small of back carry but with the knife a little bit more on your side than directly on your back. It works very well for me. It give you two draw methods, fast reverse grip draw, or if you turn your hand you can remove the blade with thumb pressure on the sheath and pull it out with a normal grip.

Just get a standard kydex sheath w/ tek lock. Ive experimented with just about every type of carry and I think Small of back/ scout style is the most comfortable and most accessible way to carry a blade of this size.

Stealing this picture- I carry like this but with the knife further to the right side so its not really on my back but more on my hip. I carry with a kydex sheath, tek lock and an ESEE molle pouch.

I like the idea of horizontal carry but state law prohibits concealed carry and I don't tuck my shirt in so that would be a no go. To be honest the way the law reads it would be iffy to have it in your pack.

Anyone try samurai style? Basically horizontal carry on the front weak side with the handle canted up 20-30 degrees. I ordered kydex from azwelke and will play around and see what works. I like the idea of it in front so it's accessible in a seated position. My girl likes to knit when we car camp and needs threads cut every so often.

I don't tuck in my shirt either and the knife is always visible. When you carry on your side with a bigger knife like that you shirt won't go over it. Ive carried in all kinds of weather this way and its always visible and accessible.

And do LEO's in you area actively go around and arrest people for concealed knives while camping? If so that is really extreme.

Two-point suspension. Moves with the body very nicely and can be adjusted to the angle you like.

No. I doubt I'd ever have a problem but I'd like to stay within the law just in case.

That's cool. I may give this a try. It's like your going to board a man o war. All you need is a parrot and an eye patch.:D

Is that a drop leg configuration? How does a large blade do when hiking in that setup?

It is a drop leg configuration, the brass ring on the belt strap lets the sheath adjust to a comfortable angle.
For me its a good way to carry larger blades; works well for my Heavy Heart...

I also like baldric carry.

The 711, though, will be light enough for belt carry without pulling your pants down.

Here's a sheath Rainwalker did for my Camp Tramp...it's a style Koyote Knives uses a lot. I like it a lot and adjust it for higher carry...feels much lighter to me. Since i got my Battle Rat in this style, i use it way more...the Battle Rat feels like a Camp Tramp and now the tramp feels like a 5" blade.

+1 on the large Spec Ops sheath for my 711. Works like a charm although I may have to inquire about thy Rainwalker sheath above too. That's nice!!

RPN: can you show a pic of the Rainwalker sheath with the knife in it and on a belt? That's a really sweet setup that I might have to order for my 711
