Carrying a BM Rescue Hook

Ok,
For some reason I'm starting to get in interest in a Recue Hook. First, does anybody here carry one just becasue they cannot carry a pocket knife?
Second, does anybody carry one to supplement their EDC of a normal knife?
And last, are the worth the money and comfortable to carry on a belt? Thanks for any responses.

I bought one just because I thought I should have one a few months ago. I am a volunteer EMT/FF and thought it might come in handy someday. So far, for carrying it I have slipped it into a keychain pouch that also carries a micro-shield CPR mask. It fits perfectly in that pouch. The whole set-up does get somewhat bulky for in-pocket carry though.

I think that this piece is designed as a kneck knife, isn't it? I bought one for my bud who wants to become an EMT. He keeps it in the car (for obvious reasons) and really seems to like it. There is one model available that acts as a key for opening O2 tanks.
I don't carry one because I don't wear a seatbelt. Seatbelts are for nerds.
(Those last two parts were written in jest. I don't carry one because I alwasy have a few other knives on my person that is sharp enough to cut a seatbelt)

I got one because I thought it would be one more handy gadget. I like the Rescue Hook itself, but the nylon sheath that came with mine is terrible. The RH falls right out of it. Useless. So it sits in a drawer, not worth spending anything to upgrade the sheath.

Got it last year, upgraded the sheath within weeks of getting it. Kydex and metal clip.

I used it last year at work during the harvest stock, cutting plastic banding and rope... put it away and brought it out again about a week ago. sharpened up and back on the belt.

carrying right now in front of my zippo, dead on 3 o'clock, thumb rest forward. Have to touch up again after this week of work, was having a hard time cutting tarp fabric today.

I carry and use it for utility, can't cut the other layers of tarp or the tarp underneath the banding. Also, when I climb the rack to find material I don't have to worry about dropping it from 30-40feet.

I use one as a whitewater rescue tool, with another knife to back it up. I have carried it at other times, on my belt and around my neck, in the plastic sheath. It is great for box opening, when you don't want to cut what's inside the box.

It's in my car as well. Once tried to open a beer bottle with it and cut myself pretty bad. Cutting a seatbelt seems to be the only use for it... I hope I'll never get into this kind of emergency

A good friend of mine carries one on his belt in the cordura pouch that came with it. He's been pleased with it. The knife is thin and flat, so it rides very easily.

I keep one in each of my cars. In one car it's attached to a grab bar over the driver's door. In the other it is attached to the driver's shoulder harness.

I just started an EMT-P program and used that as a excuse to buy one. I got the nylon sheath version and have a feeling that I should have probably gone for the Delin sheath instead. I don't regularly EDC it right now, but that will probably change next semester once we start our field/clinical hours. It IS a very handy little tool for cutting rope and fabric in my limited "testing" so far.

Hi All-

I've got the Rescue Hook secured in my car around the grab handle in the roof. It should be pretty handy there in the nylon/velcro pouch.

This blade is NEVER EVER used. My intention is to keep it as razor-sharp as when it left the Benchmade factory. This is so that if I, God-forbid, ever need to use it, it'll slice through nylon like a knife through butter.

A second Rescue Hook rides in the watch pocket of my Langlitz Leathers Padded Pocket Columbia motorcycle jacket. Same thinking applies here...if I'm ever out riding and encounter an accident, I'll have a perfect edge available to me.

The bottleopener function is completely useless. The tool is too short to get leverage on a sealed top. If you slip, you run the risk of instantly slicing your hand open to the bone. The price is right if you want a tool that will make short work of seatbelts.

Just gave mine away to a good friend, but I think it's extremely functional - but only in the plastic sheath! Explanation will follow!
I have used mine on occasions where I simply could not carry a knife legally (this is Denmark and carrying a wooden toothpick that is too sharp, may be illegal! :grumpy: )
Anyway, I have used mine to open coffee, candy, chips and other sealed bags, cut wallpaper (works like a zipper!) and all other sorts of stuff. It's even great for sharpening small twigs for roasting marshmallows!
It does however have a secondary "function" and I am not not going to write it in fear of someone misinterpreting it! :D Take a look at the pics and hopefully you'll see what I am thinking about!
As mentioned, this only works with the plastic sheath!!!

Minus the advantage of a bottle opener, that's the second thing i thought it could be used for. A single stainless-steel knuckle.

You are 100% correct. That sheath belies everything else I have come to know and expect of Benchmade's products. It's the only thing I know they make that is pure crap, and not useful at all. I have two Mini Griptilians, a Nimravus Cub, a Dark Star, a TK-1 neck knife, and an S100H2O dive knife... They are all EXCELLENT knives. The Rescue Hook itself is also excellent, but the problem is that it can easily be worked right out the side of the nylon sheath. It is the principle reason I don't carry/use it. (Not that I have much call; I'm not an EMT or anything.)

I know I could buy the plastic sheath that is probably much more secure. But even that I don't want to do, because the main reason I would like to wear the hook is during skydiving, in place of my rather cheap hook knife.

I don't expect to have to use a hook knife, since I don't currently engage in the skydiving disciplines that call for it (like Canopy Relative Work CReW). It's nice to have, though. But I won't risk loss of the Rescue Hook because of the insecurity of the nylon sheath, and I also think that there is an entanglement risk if I were to mount the kydex sheath on my chest strap where my current hook knife resides.

Does anyone know if Benchmade is willing to substitute out the sheaths? I think that they should make good on this -- give kydex sheaths to those who bought nylon ones since the nylon ones can -- fairly, I think -- be called "defective." They are mis-designed if the hook can come out that easily.

Blue skies,

On Benchmade's Rescue Hook page, they indicate the hard sheath is a separate $10 item.

I like the looks of the H20 model for the surer grip, also.

I can see the RH in a hard sheath as a great neck knife, since it's easier o pass off as a utility, non-offensive tool. Not that it would get to fly with you  but it should be OK about anywhere else.

(Anything to cure the shakes I get with no sharp objects on me! )
