i'm travelling to CO, NM and AZ in a few weeks. this is a holiday trip and hiking and camping will be an important part of the journey. as english is not my mother tongue i have some difficulties to understand the laws.

did i get that correctly that i am allowed to carry a hunting knife, 4" drop point blade, in a sheath on my belt, as long as it is not concealed but visible, in all three states (CO, NM, AZ)?

thank you very much for your help!

In your 21 or over, in AZ you can carry almost anything you please. They changed their laws in the last year to be extremely relaxed. You can even carry a gun without having to get a special permit.

In CO, you are fine carrying it openly. Concealed, it must be less than 3.5 inches. The law has a defense if it is a "hunting or fishing knife," but it is still possible be arrested (if you do something that pisses a cop off enough to search you.) Keep it out in the open when on your person to be safe.

NM has laws about carrying "deadly weapons" concealed, and among those weapons are "daggers, switchblade knives, bowie knives, poniards, butcher knives, dirk knives." Those are pretty vague terms, but again if it is not concealed, there does not appear to be any law being violated.

As with any openly carried knife, be sensible and don't carry in places like heavy urban centers or other places where you would not expect to see a knife straped to someone's belt.

hi glistam,

thank you very much for your reply! of course i will carry the knife only when necessary (hiking and camping) and not in towns/villages. i have no intention to draw anybody's attention to the knife.

best regards,
hans
