Question..i realize we on this website are knife lovers or people who just love the knive as a tool and work of art. But I asked the room what kind of knife do u carry on a daily basis and why.

I have a friends who is a NJ trooper, even though i live in Pa, he naid for carring a knife..generally the blade shouldn;t be larger than ur palm and there must be a pourpose for carring it...like for work or if u were camping...so what do u all have to say?

Every state has different knife laws, and each town within that state may also have different laws. It is up to YOU to know YOURS. I know MY laws.

If a person presents himself nicely, is polite, has no police record and the knife is well cared for and discreetly used, no one should have any serious problems. Strangely, though, self defense is often not only not a good reason for carrying a knife, but an illegal one. Thus if an LEO asks if you have any weapons on you during a stop, it's best to say, "No, but I do have a knife...."

I would love to go into some of the northern, liberal states where police and citizens hate guns and weapons of any kind and put the police under the same carry restrictions as the average citizen. I'd also love denying pistol and weapons permits to politicians who think their lives are worth more than anyone else's.

If we're going to really put our money where our mouths are in some of these states, we should seriously consider what sort of message we're sending to criminals by letting the police carry guns. And if LEOs don't think people have the right to self defense, they ought to be the first to surrender their means of self protection.

In short, the government should not take it upon itself to determine what kind of a knife anyone needs.

You should ask him if he just made that up?

The issue with the knife being larger than the palm...i grew up in NJ, and the laws there are crazy strict, I actually do remember someone saying the blade could not be larger than ur palm. But recently a town cop told me technically any type of knife a officer finds on ur can be considered a conceled weapon or weapon. Sometimes it seems like a lose, lose situatuation. Now i living in pa things seems a bit more relaxed, with knives..i always have a pocket knife on hand not for defense but for little things...

Well, the knife I use is a and the reason I use that is because the depth of I am working in on any given day. I may at time switch to a but that's only because of the button on the . But I agree with couldn't be more correct!!! Great Thread...;)

baba... are you drinking? ;)

So you're walking down the street with a friend. Each of you have the same make and model knife, only your friend is 6'2" and has hands like King Kong. Both of you are sropped and the knives found. Are you saying your friend will get off and you'll be charged because of the size of your respective hands?

There are no blade restrictions here in Maryland, but the knife can't be concealed. It has to be apparent that you have a knife and I guess you have to wear it in a pocket so it will be visible to a cop. But then I worry about being harrassed.

"Why are you carrying a CS Voyager with a 5-inch blade?" the cop will say.

"Because I'm afraid my Rajah II will mess up my shirt and I forgot where I put my Vaquero Grande."

Classic

Well, once I forgot it was on my side and I went into a carry out with a Cold Steel Recon Scout on my belt in the township. There happened to be a cop in the parking lot, and he asked why I had a giant knife on me. I told him I forgot I had it on and that I was just out in the woods and was using it, and he just continued on and didn't tell me to take it off or anything..

New Jersey law has no length restrictions on knives carried by adults. Measuring by the width of a palm is legally meaningless, palms varying. If they want to say under 4", let them say so -- it is not in the statutes.

As with anything, how you present yourself counts for a lot. I walk with a Canemasters combat cane, carved grips and fangs on the end of the crook. No one has ever questioned it, not in New Jersey, not even in New York City. A teen walking with a tire-knocker would get called on it, I'm sure.

I despise the mindset that demonizes self-defense. Self-defense should be THE valid reason for carrying any potential weapon. But we have to be aware of the defects in our laws, and defend ourselves from them as much as we would defend ourselves from a mugger.

In this sense, the police are NOT our friends, even if individual officers may be. Don't wave it around, and don't talk about it to people who don't share our understanding. And don't mention self-defense outside our community, either. The others don't want to understand.

I carry for all the packages i have to open, i work as a freight forwarder, i carry different knives based on the area im going to.
A slipjoint if theres a chance i will be stopped, a caly 3 for general use, or my sng if im hitting the warehouse.
I'm relativley clean cut, despite a full sleeve tattoo, i dont associate with others on the street, im polite and see no need to justify my use or carry.
I just cant use my knife in the company of people i dont know.

Morimotom, you owe me some wipes for my screen; I spewed my drink all over it.

Damn, in Jersey Brock Lesnar can legally carry a larger knife than me? That's messed up...
