Idle Fri morning thoughts:

From the EDC thread, I see that many of you carry a larger folder and a smaller fixed blade. For me it's usually the other way around, since I'm not allowed to conceal a fixed blade, and I feel it's more practical, as I use the fixed blade for harder tasks, and the folder more casually.

Was wondering how you carry large folder and smaller fixed blade, and what you do with the two knives.

TGIF,

Roland.

My carry depends on the fixed blade sheath setup and folder style:

- Fixed neck knife and folder in right front pocket or in an organizer in the back right pocket.

- Fixed blade in pocket sheath goes in right front pocket, and usually paired with a folder in an organizer in the back right pocket. If carrying a slip joint, I might also throw it in the left front pocket.

-Fixed blade in belt sheath is carried at 12, 1, or 3 o'clock positions and folder is carried in any one of the ways mentioned above.

I'm not being a smartass when I say I generally carry them the same as one would carry a larger fixed blade and a smaller folder.
My (modern) folder is clipped in my rfp, and the fixed is typically just behind that pocket on my belt.
I dislike neck carry and horizonal sheaths. (Not a fan of leather canted sheaths, either, honestly...though canting a small sheath on a teklok isn't horrible).

Pocket carry typically only happens if I skip the modern folder (there's a traditional in my lfp, anyway); but occasionally I'll rear pocket carry a fixed blade. Honestly, I could - perhaps even should - eliminate the modern folder from my routine; because I'm far more likely to use the traditional or fixed blade...but I'm so used to it being there that it's difficult to stop. (And I hate when I do the subconscious knife check and it isn't there)

Does Calif law prohibit even small fixed blade concealed carry?
I carry a medium folder (sm 21) on right side belt and my Horsewright Coyote or Grohmann 104 in my rd pocket.

Yep. No problem with a 5" folder, but a 3" fixed is a concealed weapon .... :(

Not just CA, BTW. For example, in WY, I can carry anything openly. But for a concealed fixed blade I need a CCP, which I don't have yet as I'm not a resident. Then again, there is no need to conceal as nobody really cares :)

I used to sometimes carry a small fixed blade in various ways , just as as backup / hideout .

In a pocket loose . Or stuck IWB/ sash carry , but on a lanyard attached to the belt , to pull off the sheath when drawn .

Homemade merc harness .

A small fixed is concealable and very handy for precise work . Easier to clean and more reliable .

I carry a large folder and a small fixed blade pretty much every day. I just carry the small fixed blade on my belt about 4 o clock. Folder in right front pocket with nothing else. Occasionally, a small slip joint in left front pocket, but not always.

I like to use my small fixed blades for work close to my kids for safety, or when cutting open oil/grease, dirty stuff at work that I don’t feel like cleaning out of pivots and locks. I can carry any knife I want to where I live and often carry a larger fixed blade in a pack when hunting or camping, etc, but I’m just not a huge fan of having a 4”+ blade hanging off my hip climbing in and out of trucks and heavy equipment throughout the day.

If I'm carrying two knives: the fixed blade is in an S.O.B. sheath, and the folder is in my left front pocket.
(Southpaw here...)
But if "Ole Slabsides" is riding high and tight in his S.O.B. holster: the fixed blades stay at home...

The only time I've sort of carried a large folder and a small fixed blade was the last time I went camping.
I like smaller fixed blades because generally I get better mechanical advantage and I like using the sturdy point for things.
I carried an Opinel #12 because it's really good for food prep and it packs away pretty small for it's overall length.

Large folder, small fixed blade.....no problem.....

Carrying two blades can be quite fun, whatever the size. I sometimes pair my Cold Steel with an Izula or my recently bought CRKT Siwi. 99% of the time, there’s really no need for two knives at least for my purposes. Both cut stuff just fine, and food prep is for designated kitchen knives.

My outfit for the day is also a factor for what I can carry. Jeans and 5.11 pants offer more freedom to carry two knives.

Actually makes sense , kinda !

A folder , even a biggun , FOLDS ...maybe not to half length , but close .

A fixed does nor fold and in fact needs a sheath , which increases the OAL for carry .
ass backwards
So , I can front pocket carry even a huge XL Espada , much easier than a comparable OAL fixed blade . :)
