Hey, guys and gals. Longtime lurker, newly registered user. I didn't even know Opinels existed until I found this forum. I carry mainly a Case Mini Trapper, or a Vic Spartan, Tinker, or Explorer, or as is most often the case: an Opinel. My favorite one is a carbone #7 I got for christmas a while back. I'm carrying my #7 today, if for no other reason that I carried my mini trapper yesterday. It didn't really hit me until a few minutes ago when I heard a news story on D-Day and how the "farmers and country" French folks are very Pro-American and thankful for the lives saved and respectful of the lives lost: I'm carrying a knife that probably wouldn't be made had it not been for the brave troops, including my Grandfathers, that fought on those beaches and dropped in behind enemy lines on that day.
It's a simple knife. It's not very flashy. The carbon steel blade is discolored and spotted with blacks, blues, grays, and browns. It's a good knife. Maybe I'm being a bit sentimental, but it feels good having it in my pocket today. It feels good to know that good men stood up to evil and won, despite the overwhelming odds of defeat. Simple men, and simple knives can accomplish a lot of things, and today I just wanted to say thanks to those that fought and died on this day, some 70 years ago, and to say thanks to my brothers in arms that still defend us to this day. From now on, I think I'll see my Opinels a bit different than I had in the past. If it wasn't for my grandfathers (medic in the 101st Airborne, another served in the Navy) and thousands of men like them, the world would be very different. My knife is a reminder that good prevailed, and it's a good knife.
thanks guys.

I think I will drop my Opi into my pocket for my wife and I date night tonight.

Good idea.

One has to wonder, on the night before D-day, how many Opinel's were used to strip ends of wire going into the detonators when the French Resistance were blowing phone lines and communication lines?

There's a great link on Google today.

In one of the links it says that the night before D-Day, the French resistance caused 42 breaks in the rail lines connecting Germany and France.

Vivre la Liberte! Vivre la France! Vivre l'Opinel!

I hadn't even thought about that. Good point jackknife. Thanks for posting that link knarfeng. Good stuff.
