I have been volunteering at my daughters school during recess and between classes I go around and pick up stuff that has been left behind. The last time I did this I noticed something shiny across the playground. When I walked up to it, it was a little piece of ribbon used to tie around birthday presents. I got to thinking, five or ten feet of the stuff wouldn't take up much space in a Altoids tin or whatever survival kit you carry and a few pieces tied in the breeze and the sun would really help to attract attention if you were trying to be found.

It's amazing how stuff reflects the light. I saw something about a block away in the street who's glow was about the size of a beer can. When I walked up to it, it was a little piece of stainless steel approximately the dimensions of a toothpick.

Good thought, for size and weight, it would probably work better than survey tape. However most survey tape breaks down over time, and is not as likely to get snagged by interested crows. Still, worth considering!

+1 for the survey tape. You can get a 600' roll for $5 and break it down into smaller rolls.

The difference between this and survey tape is the sparkle factor. I wasn't really thinking of it for marking trails but as a signaling device, like a signaling mirror that is working all the time.

My son and I each carry a heavy duty bright orange trash bad. The one's highway departments use for roadside cleanup. Multifunctional. Use them for many purposes. Ground sheet, seat, table, garbage, bear bag, pack cover, emergency poncho, emergency tarp, etc. For the purpose you describe, it can serve extremely well as a VS-17 signal panel.

Mylar from party balloons works slick for reflecting/signaling and folds up to fit small. Really cheap to, often you find them blowing loose as litter.
