Carrying large blades in checked baggage

Well, I'm flying from Seattle to San Diego, and I've got a large (12") machete with me. If I put it in checked baggage, is this legal? Will I be hassled or not?

Knives in checked luggage are OK. Size shouldn't matter. If you're worried you can print out the list of items that can be checked here:
