carrying neck knives

I know that this is a basic question, but, other than under a sweatshirt or sweater, how are neck knives carried without being obvious?

Thanks.

I wear one under the bib of my overhauls. It helps if you have an innocent look on your face too though. ;)

I adjust mine to hang just about an inch below the neck line when wearing a tee shirt type shirt. For ties, I put it on first and let it rest between the under shirt and outer shirt with the button open that is even with the handle. The knife will hang in the cleft of my chest. I do not wear a knife that is over 3/8" thick handle with square corners. The neck knife for me, just replaces the folding pocket knife, but is handier. I use a leather lace and some wear a beaded chain. Most of people that do not frequent the forums or read books on knives, do not have a clue what is on the end of the necklace.
When asked what I have on, I tell them and end up showing some of them. Almost all think it is cool and the others don't want to see. :)

put a "G" clip on my woo sheath, makes a good iwb carry knife now - i wear a necklace, so a gold necklace and a paracord look funky together, i never wear a necker on my neck....

I like the concept of neck knives, but I've found that I don't actually like to wear neck knives unless it's an extremely light piece. Neck knives have become overly large, heavy, and cumbersome for my taste lately.
About the only neck knife that I wear regularly is my G10 Perrin Griffe with paracord. It's so ultralight that it doesn't allow the paracord to ride up above my shirt collar.

To me, there are two aspects of neck knives that need to be considered :
weight and size.
Even if weight is kept down to a bare minimum, the knives are often 4 inches or more, which makes it hard to let your arms rest on your stomach without coming in contact with the knife.

I have a couple of neck knives that I find ok though - Fällkniven G1 (a bit long) and Fällkniven WM1, which is ok.

Hi Eric :)...the only thing I don't like about parachord for neck-rigs is that someone can choke you because of it's strength. So I use the small diameter well made chains.

I also agree about size..., it gets yucky carrying a BIG neck piece.

Sorry i have to admit:
i donot wear them around my neck up to 80% of the time!
Mostly i prefer to carry little fixed (neckknives) hanging from the belt into the pocket of my trousers.
For me it is much more comfortably (and faster).

Hey Pete, I agree with you about the risk involved with being choked via your own paracord, so instead of using the paracord ends tied together, I use a 1/2" long piece of 1/4" diameter copper tubing to join the ends of my paracord together. I feed each end into the tube and crimp it securely, but not impossibly tight. In my estimation it takes the same amount of pressure to pull the paracord loose from the crimp as it does to break dogtag chain. Problem solved. :)

Here's a few of my fave Griffes:

Hi Tom,

That's a Fred Perrin G10 Griffe. You can learn more about them here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=116053&highlight=perrin

This was a limited run that my friend Larry Brahms and I had done for the Emerson Usual Suspects last winter. I might be mistaken, but I believe that Larry has a few left. You can contact Larry at larry@bladeart.com

The G10 Griffes are a great last ditch defensive piece. Light as a feather, yet very strong for a synthetic blade. If you have any questions, feel free to shoot me an e-mail.

I can't stand wearing anything around my neck, on a daily basis. I have a Perrin La Griffe, and I've found that the only time I can stand wearing a neck knife is when out walking at night. I'll wear it under a sweater or sweatshirt...using a light ball-chain.

I usually end up carry the La Griffe IWB anyhow. I use a short bit of chord that is then looped through a belt loop or through my belt...works great. Only problem is that carry a conceiled fixed blade is illegal in CA...so I'm pretty careful where I go with it.

Ted

I compromised on the ballchain/paracord question. What I wear now is a section of outer sheath from 550 paracord long enough to wrap most of the way around my neck. Threaded through the inside of the paracord sheath is the ballchain that carries my Busse Assault Shaker, which is a heavy (as well as heavy-duty) necker if ever there was one. The handle of the AS rides just about at diaphram level. I get the comfort of paracord coupled with the breakaway action of ballchain.
