Carrying tomahawks in the field

Hi, there! I've tried to do searches, but unfortunately the search function only works for me about half the time here...anyway, here's my question:

I've heard that tomahawks have been utilized in Afghanistan and Iraq by our soldiers. I was just wondering how they carry them. Strapped to their packs or to their web gear? And where? I was always curious. I always found space on my web gear to be at a premium and can't really envision a way to carry one for practical deployment, but there must be a way.

While camping you can stick it in your pack, but tactical needs are different. So, do any of you guys know how they carry them, or have any of you seen pics with the 'hawks on their gear?

Thanks,

I have one customer on his fourth tour in the sandbox in particular, who carries his with a shoulder rig from The Sheath Mechanic. Get this... a Himalayan Khukri or Fixed blade Fighter on the strong side and one of my hawks on the weak side.

It seems that quite a lot of the guys do this type of shoulder carry. But it has to be the right sheath design, and the shoulder straps must have a quick release buckle for safety.

I hope I helped...

Thanks, Eddie. It was a help. I was thinking that a shoulder-type sheath might be the only practical way to carry one sans a pack, but I wasn't sure how most soldiers were doing it.

In Blade Magazine last month a maker was quoted as saying that guys using his hawks generally don't use their sheaths, they just strap the hawk to their packs. Hopefully they are not purchasing their packs themselves?

Some of my freinds who were in Vietnam used the shoulder rig or a top loading belt sheath like the one that comes with the cold steel combat hawk

Carried a VTAC in Iraq. First, most of us purchase our own patrol packs since most army packs suck. I invested in a quick release sheath from survival sheaths, mounted it to my assault pack and kept in on there. If I had had a MOLLE quick release sheath like the K5, I probably would have mounted the hawk on my IBA (body armor). I had to "jimmy rig" the survival sheath to my pack with the old standard of 550 cord. I was able to reach my pack while in the vehicle and it stayed with me, most of the time.

I'm back in the states for some schooling and always looking ahead to my next deployment. The K5 has such a great sheath. Having the capability to attach it to either my pack or body armor makes life a bit easier. On the next tour, I plan to carry one hawk on my person and one on my pack.

Raising this from the dead.
Yes, I carried a Hawk while in Iraq. It had attachments for my WEB gear which made it easy. I mostly had it attached to my bug out bag in the HMMWV other them that it was hooked into my IBA on my back or on my pack on my back since I was already maxed out with ignorant kit.
