Carrying valuable knife collection on a plane . . .

I need to take around $15,000 worth of knives (custom) on a domestic flight. They obviously need to be checked, but I'm concerned about insurance. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks.

I have always worried about this issue. I once had a rifle come up missing after a flight. It showed up a week later with the hinges and locks busted off the metal travel case. Seems the lowlife that snagged it returned it after he found out it was a 1906 6.5mm.

What most people don't know is that on a plane the pilots have the last word. And that word is law. You can find out who the pilot will be for your flight and explain what the deal is. If the pilot is in a good mood, he can allow you to bring the locked case into the passenger area and it will then be put into a secure locker by the flight crew. I have never tried this, but some of my LEO buddies have done it with their sidearms.

Hello,

I have had a personal experience regarding this type of issue. Last year I personally transported approx. $14K worth of customs from Denver to the LVCKS. I packed them all in zipper pouches in an attache case. The case went through the standard security check and I had no problem carrying them on. Each of the blades were folders under 4" inches in length. Although it took a while to get the astounded security people to let me go because they had never seen damascus blades with ivory, pearl, titanium, etc. there was never a problem regarding detainment or anything associated with violation of FCC regulations. I just carried them on, and kept them under the seat in front of me. No fuss no muss!! :)

My suggestion is as follows:

1) Divide the knives into two catagories 1 - below 4", one above 4".
2) Put the ones below 4" in an attache case and carry them on.
3) Put the knives above 4" in a suite case or luggage and declare them in check in.

FCC regulation calls for all knives 4" or over to be checked. Those under 4" can be carried on. Insurance of course is always an option. But, since my family is really more concerned about me then my knife collection, the only one that would miss them is me.

Just my experience and opinion for what it is worth.. Worked for me.

Hi Erik,

Are you travelling outside of Canada? If so there are some precautions you need to take. Please email me offline.

I have travelled to more shows than I can remember. Maybe I am just lucky, but other than my bags getting to Baltimore late once and to Atlanta once. I have had no problems with transporting knives. There have been times when close to $80,000 have been in those two cases.

I would recommend buying a hard side suitcase, such as a Samsonite. Use all three locks, then put one of the locking straps through the handle that covers the number lock. Additionally, you can wrap security tape around the key locks. This will slow down the biggest thieves in the air line industry...baggage handlers.

As for someone stealing your case when it hits the baggage claim. First, get there as quick as you can. With most airlines it is not a problem for you to get to the baggage claim before your luggage does.

My bags have one other advantage, their weight. Most are very close to the magical 72 pounds (if they are a little over, then the curb side check in baggage handler gets a tip). Even when I was younger I was no world class sprinter. But I am here to tell you, that even now, it wouldn't take me very long to run down a theif trying to carry my 75 pound oversized Samasonite Hard Side suitcase.

One other thing about baggage handlers. When I have $40,000 of knives in each bag, those guys get a $5.00 tip per bag. They don't complain about the weight and the bags always get to the proper destination.

Hi Les,

Thank you for the advice, I will follow it. I will be travelling withing the continental U.S. Have you been able to find any insurance company which will provide coverage for the bags? So far the best I have been able to find is my credit card company will cover $3000 if I buy the airline ticket with my credit card.

I'd feel better if they were completely insured.

Give Ron White a call at 859.885.9454. I purchased travel insurance (not correct name) for $25,000 coverage for around $120.00 a year. Luckly I've never had to file a claim.

I also carry all my folders on the plane. I ship the sheath knives in my checked luggage.

Stay Safe,
A.T.
