Anyone who has held a Kit Carson knife knows what rock solid is. For those of you who don’t you will not find a knife that locks up more solid or reliable. Not only does my small M4 have an S30v blade that locks up like a bank vault, it has another A2 blade that fits just as perfectly. The blades can be switched depending on what blade steel I wish to use quite easily. Talk about tight tolerances. 2 Blades for the same knife and both work flawlessly. How’s that for some skill and craftsmanship? I have used and carried this knife every day since I have had it except for the short time Kit had it to make the second blade, and a perfect edc it is for me. I am still amazed that Kit can make 2 blades for 1 knife, and have them both fit and lock up so perfectly. Amazing!!!

Here is my opinion on the difference between S30V and A2. For the most part I really couldn't tell much difference between the performances of them, unless I did side by side
Comparison.

Corrosion resistance hasn't been a factor yet, and I haven't tried to make either One rust. Nor have I tried to prevent it, I just have treated them both the same and given them my normal care. However, I think it is safe to say S30V is more corrosion resistant than A2.

They both take a killer edge, and resharpen very easily but the
A2 sharpens up a little faster. S30 seems to not get as fine when I tried to get a very hi polished edge. I don't much care for the really polished edge and a 1200 grit edge
is what I been mostly putting on both for the last few months. I have started putting on a 600 grit edge and really like this grit so far on both blades.

A2 will hold its edge longer initially. After a lot of cutting and the peek sharpness are gone both hold a working edge for a long time. It has taken a lot to get both dull and its difficult to tell witch one gets dull first.
A2 is also tougher. I have put small dings in the S30 and done the same thing with the A2 with no damage. The A2 blade is at a high RC 59, and if I remember right the S30 was RC 59.
Well, there you have it my scientific impressions.
Thanks Kit for the great knife.

I have it on good authority that you wouldn't know a good knife if it poked you in the ass! :)

Say, maybe you can get a blade made for your knife out of that cool surg-I-cal stainless steel that can be found on the ultra-cool boowiee knives sold on the Shopping Channel!

Hehe! For all readers, this is a bit of an inside joke. Cool knife Bill, and it must be awesome to compare the 2 side by side like that.

Thanks DB this is useful. There was hype about the durability of S30V and it is nice to see how it stacks up against good old A2.

LOL Cray, I been told that many times.
Jeff thanks. S30V is some great stuff. It preforms wonderfully when all factors are considered. Maybe the best all round steel in my opinion. Sure it isn't the toughest, or most ware resistant, or most stainless, but it does all three very well. I like it alot.
For the guy who thinks I am bsing about the 2 blades, you know who you are James :)

:p

I'm a S30V man myself but its not a surprise that the A2 performed so well. Kit knows his heat treating.

Cool knife. Congrats.

It sounds to me like S30 has proven to be reasonably comparable to A2 which was one of the promises when S30 was introduced.

I am becoming more and more impressed with S30 as a very high quality stainless cutlery steel.

Thanks for the review!

A few weeks ago, Kit heat treated some chisels I ground out of A2.
they have sharpened up great and really hold an edge.

On the other hand, Mike Obenauf has made me a few different folders out of S30V. His edges hold up great as well.

Ya, I know I'm not doing the same sort of thing with each tool so it's hard for me to compare.

One thing I do know is that those Kaintucky boys sure know how to make an edged tool:D
