Well... I have been threatening to do this for some time now... my 2 year old is awesome as can be and loves daddy's knives... so I decided it was time for me to make her something. I know a lot of kids and certain people think knives are weapons to attack things with but my daughter already knows what a knife is for, and she knows to leave daddy's alone. One of her first words was knife (I know that sounds crazy, and it made the wife mad) and its always dumbfounded me that she understood at an early age that a knife was meant to cut things open... IE boxes etc etc and that they are tools. She has been known to take my knife catalogs and tell me she is going to buy one for daddy..... so I roughed out a scrap of wood from the garage and finished it up while we were all outside playing the next day. Probably an hour total of work into it with no design, just started whittling with my BK14. Detail work was done with the Sheepsfoot on my Old Timer, (My favorite whittler) and then cleaned up with a file. Lanyard hole drilled with my SAK Farmer. BK9 for size reference.

It may not be perfectly pretty, but it reminds me of the wooden guns and knives my Papa and Dad would whittle for me as a kid. She was so proud when I gave it to her... within moments she had put my binoculars on, a funny hat, and put the knife in her waistband (her exploring outfit) and we were exploring the house. Then we "cut" up some of her play veggies and made ear soup. (With Mr. Potato Heads Ears in it LOL) Surprisingly she has not tried to hack or hurt anything in the house with it... (or the cat or her brother...) Overall this was fun project that made a little girl happy. I am glad in a world of so many electronic distractions she can enjoy simple things.

On a side note a convexed BK14 is an amazing carving blade. The handle shape, grind etc etc (all the good things) about the blade allow you to really haul off material... or take off fine controlled slivers. It just fits me very well and I am able to really put out on it with zero hand discomfort. I think it is a fine crafting blade.

And here as a bonus a sword I freehand ground out of a old saw blade. I jokingly made it for my son last Halloween for his costume (He was only 3 months old, did it to kid with my wife) It is heat treated and everything... just not sharp.

Thanks for reading and looking along.

Sounds like you are an awesome dad with a great daughter. You're clearly pretty talented at working with your hands too - if I whittled that cleaver it would look like a beaver chewed it.

Good stuff man. I remember my dad making me a pirates sword out of cardboard, yardstick, and aluminum foil one year for my holloween costume when I was a kid. I played with that thing for weeks until it finally fell apart.

Obviously it made a very positive impact on you. You make some amazingly nice blades. Been meaning to say for awhile how much I admire what you make. I love the threads featuring your Magua, looks like a phenomenal blade. One of these days I hope to own one.

Thanks for sharing your memories.
