This is something Ive wanted to do for some time now. I scored a 2x6 piece of cedar that had really straight grain awhile back, so I decided to get started on it today. My oldest boy is making one too, so this is kinda a papa bear/baby bear endevor. Ive carved before. Mostly for furnature making, but I know my way around woodworking. This however is my sons first project.

So we started with my paddle. I showed him how to find the center, and how to set up the dimensions. We also talked of the importance to measure 4x, and cut once. We also spoke of the differant styles of paddles and their purposes.... He watched me as I did mine, and then he sat down with a paper and drew his up, then transfered it to the board. Carefully measuring for symatry. He then got a lesson in power tools. Now, this project is gonna be done mainly by hand, but to rough out the shape, we used the skill saw. Easier, and seemed like a good time for him to power up the saw.

We are nowhere near completed but the wheels have started turnin. Ill post progress pics as the project nears completion. Mine is the longer one, and hopefully (:o) will be a functioning paddle for me. My boy is doing a decoritive paddle with a fish that is going to see some detailed carving. Hes doin it as a christmas gift for my father.

Hope you enjoy the pics.

Those look great so far, and a cool way to teach a skill too. Nice job to both of you!

Thanks guys.....:)

Dane, no we havent bought one yet. We rent them from time to time, and I have a few friends with them that we borrow. However, we are hopefully going to be buying one in the next few months.

Yes he had safety glasses on. In the first pic of him, he doesnt have the saw on. We were talking about the position of the saw and lining up the with the line. The saw was not plugged in tp the wall. In the second pic, he has glasses on. My buddy in that first pic is a grown up, so I dont force him. I wear glasses so I was gtg. I work ambulance, and the wife is an RN, so we take safety seriously. Thanks for the concern.

nice job, and plenty of smaller scrap to carve and or make a fire board out of.

I need to get to making things with my girls.

Sounds good. Just get him some hearing protection as well like you should be wearing on the meat wagon. That way he does not grow up like you and I with varying degrees of hearing loss.

If we teach 'em right and don't let them sit around in front of the TV they will know right when they get our age and hopefully be able to save this country from those who don't even know what a paddle is.

Be sure and share those finished pics, both on and off the water. Pics of the boat too. :D
