It's a lovely day out.

Mora, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make a handle for this poor naked 3'x0.25" Going Gear firesteel.

I used the Bk9 used to chop out a little block from a pretty piece of Red Cedar.

Hmm too big still, and there's a nasty gouge on one side...

Split!

Much closer, final carving can come after fitting.

Skipping over a brief visit to the drill press

The ferro rod is a tight press fit...Almost done...

A little final carving...

...and some sanding...

Done! Here it is hanging out with a jute twine bracelet I made.

Well i should probably sand it a little finer, and put some tung oil on it...but basically done.

Smooth out the edges and sand in a little indentation on the flat sides and a little oil, nice job

Great job man !
I'll pick up a firesteel blank and put a handle myself too :)
Anyone knows are the firesteel blanks from Brisa.fi any good ?

I dont know but i sort of like the way it is on the rough side. Great job its so much better then anything you can buy out there, You made it your self.

Great job!
Since cedar is a soft wood, you might consider a little 5-minute epoxy to secure the rod to the handle. Just in case the wood/rod connection get wobbly. :)

Some additional pics.

My nephew borrowed the mora and produced some very interesting curls. They didn't even look like wood. Just totally smooth and creamy, they looked like rose petals. The pic doesn't do them justice.

Also, we have an old machete with a broken handle we plan to canibalize in my first attempt at knife making. So he, rather jumping the gun IMHO started on a handle.

He insisted i post it up.

Looks nice. I used a piece of deer antler for my 5/16" firesteel. Glued it in with super glue. Drilled a lanyard hole and strung the steel, fatwood and strike together.

Nicely done! Plus, you've got something useful that you made yourself. Always a plus in my book.
