Hi,
I'm taking a carving class at The Woodwright's School this fall and am seriously thinking about making a few fishtail gouges of my own. I already have a full set of Pfeils, so this is strictly for fun. Basically, I'd like to play with some more interesting steels than the standard O1/A2/W1, to see if I can get an improvement in edge holding/wear resistance. I've actually made a few out of W1 before, using a half round file to shape the bevels, as I did not have a forge at the time. Not fun, but it did work.
Any input on shaping/steel selection would be welcomed. Thanks!
Mike
